We had yet another great week here at Canyon School. Day on the Creek was a success! We'd like to thank our community partners and volunteers for sponsoring this wonderful day of learning. Place-based education is the process of using the local community and environment to teach concepts across the curriculum. This can include a place's cultures, history or geophysical features. With place-based learning, we aim to foster a sense of place, belonging, citizenship and contribution for students within our community. We are grateful for this opportunity.

Canyon staff will continue to explore place based pedagogy at the new LRSD PEAKS Collegiate Campus on May 19th for our Staff Learning Day. There is no school for students. We hope you have a wonderful and safe extra long weekend and look forward to seeing the students return on Tuesday, May 23rd.

If you haven't had a chance to complete our Inclement Weather Pilot Program survey, please do so by the end of day Friday, May 19th. We plan to share the results with central office and the board of trustees next week. We thank you for your input and feedback. If you have difficulty accessing the survey, please call Marilyn at 403-627-3118 and she can input your survey response for you.

We'd like to thank those parents registered for our Early Learning and Kindergarten programs already. Next year planning is underway. If your child is NOT returning to Canyon School for the 2023-2024 school year, please let the office know. If you would like to register, please go to the Online registration on our school website. New student registration closes on June 1, 2023. Thank you.

We'd like to celebrate that our school achieved 2 out of 3 of our school goals based on the Measurable Results Assessment Survey. Thank you to everyone for contributing to this success! Although we showed improvement in our Leadership: Family Engagement goal, we did not reach our goal of 80%. Hello Canyon Families,

What another beautiful week here in Pincher Creek. It has been great to see our children organizing themselves at recess into their own teams playing soccer and baseball, or exploring the back hill playing their own imaginary games. If you have a child that finds it difficult to know how to join in these games or frequently comes home upset that they spend recess alone - please let me know and I will see if I can try and help. Unfortunately children aren’t good mind readers and don’t always think to ask others to join in, and it can be quite intimidating to ask to join a game once it’s underway.

I have enjoyed seeing the small, handpicked, bouquets of wild crocuses making their way onto teachers’ desks this last week. Children have a lovely way of showing gratitude, which doesn’t always require words. Research shows that even small acts of gratitude can produce a 10 per cent increase in happiness and 35 per cent reduction in depressive symptoms. What are you grateful for today?

Here at Canyon we have so much to be grateful for. For one, we have an amazing, kind and caring team of education assistants, who work hard to understand and support all of the students they work with. Late last month we had two wonderful new EAs join them part time. Dana Bruised Head and Valerie Kostelansky have already connected well with your children and we are so fortunate to have them.

If you’re looking for ways to talk to your children about gratitude and incorporate it into your family there are some great ideas here https://www.all4kids.org/news/blog/how-to-teach-the-value-of-gratitude-to-children/

Take good care,
Jocelyn

On Wednesday, May 3, 2023, Albertans are invited to take part in Hats On! For Mental Health and wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health. Schools can participate by encouraging students and staff to wear hats and engaging in conversations focused on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illness. Mentally healthy students are more resilient and better able to learn, achieve success and build healthy relationships.
You can learn more about Hats On! For Mental Health by visiting the Can We Talk website, which is sponsored by the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association and includes a variety of mental health resources for schools. To explore ideas for understanding and promoting positive mental health, visit Alberta's mental health in schools web page.
