The 2026 Census has begun! Asking yourself "why should I fill out the Census?" It directly influences federal and provincial funding in your community, when most public funding is based on the population where you live. It impacts the money distributed to schools, emergency services, hospitals and clinics, and yes, EVEN libraries. If you don't get counted, then your community loses that funding.

Alt text: A repost from Statistics Canada, encouraging Canadians to fill our their Census.

The has begun! Look for your census letter in the mail. Census data paint a portrait of Canadians and their stories – from small communities to entire provinces and territories.

Complete your census today: https://www.census.gc.ca/en/index?utm_source=fb&utm_medium=smo&utm_campaign=statcan-statcan-cpop2026-coll.

The Happy Bookers have chosen Shelby Van Pelt's book, "Remarkably bright creatures," for the month of May!

It is available in ebook and audiobook format on hoopla, or if you prefer a paper copy, please reach out to the library.

The book is described as "a charming, feel-good story about an elderly widow, Tova Sullivan, who forms an unlikely friendship with a curmudgeonly giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus at a local aquarium." It explores themes of friendship, grief, hope and community.

Discussion will take place Wednesday May 27 2026, 7:00 PM at Pierson Branch Library.

Alt text: a photo depicting the front cover of the book described above. On the cover, an older woman with a smile is sitting on a bench in an indoor aquarium. There is aquatic vegetation all around her, and she is looking up at an octopus in the foreground.
