🍃 Cool, moist, and leaf-littered? — Sounds like home to this Red Backed Salamander!

Salamanders thrive in damp, shaded habitats, spending most of their lives hidden beneath logs, rocks, and fallen branches.

If you’re exploring wooded areas at Sandbanks, remember that what looks like simple forest debris is actually important habitat. Leaving logs and stones undisturbed helps give these tiny amphibians the shelter they need to survive.

🔎🌿 Look closely, tread lightly, and help protect the hidden life of our park forests.

⚠️ On Tuesday June 9th, the Dunes Beach parking area will be closed for paving.

Foot traffic and vehicle access will be prohibited during this time.

Visitors in the area may experience increased noise and machinery while crews complete this work. We encourage visitors to make use of Lakeshore Beach and Outlet Beach during this temporary closure due to limited parking at West Gate.

For everyone’s safety, pedestrians and motorists should use extra caution in the area and follow all posted signage and staff direction. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we complete these necessary repairs.

Which way is up? 🤔🙃

For a Red‑breasted Nuthatch, it doesn’t really matter.

These tiny, energetic birds are famous for hopping head‑first down tree trunks, clinging to bark at angles most birds wouldn’t dare try. By moving upside down, nuthatches can spot insects and seeds hidden in crevices that others might miss. Talk about a different perspective!

If you see a little bird defying gravity, it just might be a nuthatch doing what it does best.
