NEWS: Community Living Prince Edward and OPSEU Local 448 issue joint letter to Premier Ford urging the delivery of immediate funding to help end strike.

Dear Premier Ford,

We are writing to urge you to deliver immediate funding to help end this strike and ensure that the people supported by Community Living Prince Edward can receive the support of their skilled and dedicated workers and can resume participation in their community.

Across developmental services, agencies like Community Living Prince Edward are facing growing pressures: waitlists are growing, support needs are becoming more complex, and it is increasingly difficult to recruit and retain dedicated staff. Funding levels are not keeping up with operational realities or growing demand for services.

A skilled and dedicated workforce is essential in ensuring that individuals with disabilities and their families receive the care and support they need. Many agencies are struggling to retain or recruit staff, which has a direct impact on the quality of care and support that people receive.

Cost-of-living pressures are also placing significant strain on these dedicated workers and agencies who provide care and support in many roles and capacities. Many workers are facing personal financial crises, including increased debt, reliance on overdraft, and food bank dependence.

We are calling on your government to deliver immediate funding for a Bill 124 remedy, along with sustained and dedicated investments in community and social services.

Without additional dedicated funding, agencies are unable to deliver meaningful wage increases for workers while also keeping pace with growing operational pressures and increasing demand for services. The cost of inaction will be far greater – for workers, for people with disabilities and their families, and for the long-term sustainability of these critical services.

Sincerely,
Susan Treverton, Executive Director, Community Living Prince Edward
Jason Sweet, Bargaining Chair, OPSEU Local 448

Community Living Prince Edward continues to respond to the ongoing labour disruption that began on May 25, 2026, at 12:01 a.m., following unsuccessful collective bargaining negotiations with the local OPSEU union representing many of our employees.

From the outset of this process, our focus has remained on the health, safety, and well-being of the people we support, while also recognizing and respecting the legal right of unionized employees to participate in the collective bargaining process and lawful strike action.

As an organization that supports people in their homes and communities, we made difficult but necessary decisions in recent days to temporarily relocate people receiving services. These decisions were made out of concern for the safety, and privacy of the people we serve after we were unable to secure clear picketing protocols that would ensure there would be no picketing activity at or near people’s personal homes.

Given recent labour disruption activities involving OPSEU unions in other parts of the province and locally, we believed it was critical to take proactive steps to address the disruptions caused by unlimited picketing (particularly by people who are not our employees) at the homes of people we support. We maintain that people’s homes must remain safe and that private spaces should never become the focus of labour activity.

We welcome and share the union's public messaging that has now focused on dignity and respect, values that are deeply aligned with the work of Community Living Prince Edward and the broader developmental services sector. We want to acknowledge the impact this situation is having on everyone involved, including our employees. We value the dedication, and care that CLPE employees bring to the people we support every day. We remain committed to working collaboratively and respectfully with union leadership as picketing activities continue.

Throughout this labour disruption, Community Living Prince Edward leadership have remained on site and available around the clock to ensure continuity of care and support with people we serve.

Community Living Prince Edward remains hopeful that a resolution can be reached through respectful dialogue and continued collective bargaining efforts.

💚💙Advocacy means a lot - especially during May is Community Living Month! Thank you to Emilie Lewis for voicing your local insights during the 2026 Day at the Legislature.

It was a pleasure welcoming Emilie Lewis and representatives from Community Living Prince Edward to Queen’s Park as part of their advocacy day.

Emilie is a strong voice for inclusion and accessibility in the Bay of Quinte, and I appreciated the opportunity to hear more about the ways that we could better support individuals with disabilities and the organizations that help them thrive in our communities.

Thank you to Community Living for the important work you do every day and for bringing advocates from across Ontario together at Queen’s Park.

We share an important message from the Council of CLO...

As the labour action continues across Ontario's developmental service sector, the Council of CLO recognizes the right of workers to advocate for fair wages. At the same time, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right to feel safe, respected, and at peace where they live.

People's homes are homes first. The Council of CLO asks that the privacy, dignity, and safety of people be respected and that there will not be picketing at our homes.

The Council of Community Living Ontario (Council of CLO), is a leadership and advocacy group made up of self-advocates from across the province, with lived experience of intellectual or developmental disabilities.
