Our riding association is made up of the City of Peterborough and the communities of Douro-Dummer, Galway-Cavendish and Harvey, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, North Kawartha, Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield, and Curve Lake First Nation.

On Monday September 14th a broad swathe of movements, communities, and organizations will gather en masse for a major rally, march and protest against Carney’s “Investor Summit”, starting at Nathan Phillips Square at 6 PM.

While we encourage you to sign up for the summit (especially Sunday’s teach-in), the Peterborough Kawartha New Democratic Party is hoping to fill a bus to Toronto and be part of “The Many vs the Money” Protest and you are invited to join us.

Congratulations to OPSEU 358, Community Living Trent Highlands (OPSEU/SEFPO L358) for winning a tentative agreement with the province after months on the picket line.

The Peterborough NDP was proud to stand with them at their picket last Monday while final negotiations were ongoing.

We are proud to be sponsoring ReFrame Film Festival in their screening of Q***r Cinema for Palestine’s collection of short films as part of the No Pride in Genocide global film event.

The screening is taking place this Friday, June 26th at the Peterborough Library in the Friends of Library Community room. Doors are at 5:30pm and the screenings begin at 6:30.

This is a pay-what-you-can event. Tickets can be bought online or at the door. See you there!

We had a great townhall last Friday on the manufactured crisis postsecondary education is facing in Peterborough and the province. MPP Peggy Sattler, Peterborough Youth NDP chair Ace Martin-Graham, Trent Faculty President Dwayne Collin, and PDLC board member Carmen Gelette all gave excellent speeches on their personal experiences and the issues facing students and workers

Doug Ford’s Conservatives are engineering the collapse of our public healthcare.

The Conservatives are funnelling money to for-profit clinics while starving hospitals and disrespecting care workers, fully aware that for-profit clinics are less efficient and require more money per procedure.

Their actions are not about saving money or better care. They are about entrenching the power of the rich and well-connected, regardless of how many people suffer or how much public money is burned.

Good health, convenience and prestige for the rich. Worse and more expensive care for the rest of us.

The PKNDP will always stand up for public healthcare. We will fight for care workers, better healthcare coverage and hospital funding so everyone gets the quality care they deserve.

Photos from Federal NDP convention last March! Peterborough sent 6 delegates and it was very exciting and inspiring for all of us. So many great speakers, lot of good policy passed, and Avi Lewis became our new leader!

In response to the financial crisis Fleming is facing and the provincial conservatives’ abandonment of post secondary education, the governing board of Fleming has, without consulting employees and their unions or the community at large, decided to merge with St Lawrence College in Kingston.

This decision is indicative of a growing reality in our institutions and in our society broadly. Disregard for democracy, for working class people, and for the public good in favour of singleminded focus on the bottom line. This decision threatens yet more college programs and the livelihoods of yet more of our community members, all to serve the conservative austerity agenda.

There is more than enough wealth in the hands of the rich to ensure our colleges and universities work for students, workers, and our economy. The NDP stands with Fleming workers and will continue to fight for an Ontario where post secondary is a top priority.
