Every day across Canada, firefighters put themselves at risk to keep their communities safe. January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize cancer as the leading cause of job-related deaths for firefighters in Canada. Firefighters' dangerous work often exposes them to toxic chemicals from burning materials leading to a higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer.

On Tuesday, December 16, 2025 John Jordan MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston visited several fire departments in the area and learned more about the challenges they face as they continue to protect our families and communities!

He presented the fire departments with a Fire Protection Grant. This funding ensures our firefighters will have the resources they need to expand cancer-prevention initiatives.

The Fire Board for the Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue would like to thank Enbridge and the Fire Marshal's Public Fire Safety Council for donating 186 combination smoke/CO alarms to Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue through Safe Community Project Zero - a public education campaign that will provide more than 14, 200 alarms to residents in 75 communities across Ontario.

When properly installed and maintained, combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms help provide the early warning to safely escape from a house fire or carbon monoxide exposure. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, odourless gas that is a by-product of incomplete combustion of many types of common fuels.

For more information please contact the Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley Fire Rescue Administration Office at 613-267-2596 ext. 4.
