🐢 Happy World Turtle Day! 🐢

Did you know Lanark County Public Works staff play an important role in protecting turtles right here at home?

Through the County’s Turtle Reporting Program, Public Works staff track turtles spotted on County roads - from those crossing safely to injured turtles and nesting sites. This work helps:
• Protect nesting areas during road construction and maintenance
• Identify “hotspots” for future turtle fencing and protection measures
• Reduce road mortality—one of the biggest threats to turtles in Ontario

Since all 8 turtle species in Ontario are at-risk, every sighting matters. Some turtles take up to 20 years to mature and can live for 70 years, meaning saving even one turtle can help protect generations to come.

In 2025 alone, staff reported over 200 turtles on County roads, helping guide conservation efforts across Lanark County. This resulted in 66 nest protectors being deployed through OUR Turtles, and 3 injured turtles that were transported to veterinary care.

This unique program shows how small, everyday actions by County staff can make a big impact on local wildlife. 💚

👉 Keep an eye out for turtles on local roads this season, and remember: if it’s safe to do so, help them continue in the direction they’re travelling.

Follow Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre for more info on protecting turtles.

Happy World Bee Day! 🐝
Pollinators (including bees 🐝) are essential to healthy ecosystems—and here in Lanark County, we’re helping support them through our pollinator and restoration projects.
Lanark County’s long-term vegetation goal is to establish diverse roadsides with abundant pollinator habitat. We restore our roadsides by controlling invasive plants, planting or seeding disturbed soil, and by participating in new projects aimed at improving pollinator habitat. Here are just a few of the pollinator patches staff have created.
Keep an eye out for these patches across the County—these spaces are making a big impact! 🐝 🌸 🦋

Today is Endangered Species Day 🐢🦋🐍🦎
Did you know the Blanding’s Turtle, found right here in Ontario, is a threatened species? Road mortality and habitat loss have made it harder for these turtles to survive and reproduce.
Protecting wetlands, slowing down on rural roads, and supporting conservation efforts can make a real difference.
Help protect the species that call our community home.🐢

Emergency preparedness is climate preparedness.

Climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events including floods, heat waves, storms, and wildfires. By preparing for these extreme weather events, you can create a safer and more resilient home and community in the face of climate change.

Follow these steps to keep you and your family safe during an extreme weather event:
• Step 1. Know the risks
• Step 2. Make an emergency plan
• Step 3. Build an emergency preparedness kit
