The City Of Penticton is home to many raccoons and around this time of the year they have their babies. Raccoons baby season in the Okanagan is usually during April and May, so don't be surprised come June when they start making themselves known.

It's important for people to take a few precautions around their homes to help prevent any conflict and coexist peacefully with these clever animals.

🦝Prevent raccoons from nesting by blocking or sealing any crawl spaces around your home and out-buildings.

🦝Always keep your trash and compost secured in a covered bin.

🦝Don't feed wildlife. Things like bird feeders will attract raccoons and small rodents.

🦝Don't try and relocate raccoons without professional help. It's very stressful and often results in orphaned babies.

🦝 Many areas have restrictions on when humane trapping can occur because the babies cannot survive on their own until they are three months of age.

Hey Everyone,

We have received an influx in calls for service for dogs leaving their properties and chasing cyclists. What starts as a quick chase can quickly turn into a dangerous situation for everyone involved.

Dogs may chase cyclists for many reasons; prey drive, excitement, territorial behaviour or simply because something fast moving has caught their attention. Even a friendly, well trained dog can cause a cyclist to crash.

A secure yard is your first line of defense! 🏡

Regularly inspect fences, gates and latches for damage or gaps.

Ensure your gates close and latch properly, every time.

Check for areas where your dog may dig under or squeeze through the fencing.

Being a responsible dog owner means not only planning for the unexpected, it's also providing physical exercise and mental enrichment to help reduce unwanted negative behaviours. 🐶
