This month, we shine a light on the invisible, but life-changing impact of brain injuries. From concussions to severe trauma, millions of Canadians are living with challenges that often can’t be seen, but are deeply felt every day.

Brain injury can affect memory, emotions, communication, and independence. It changes lives - not just for individuals, but for families, friends, and entire communities.

💬 Let’s break the silence. Let’s listen, learn, and support one another.
Because awareness is the first step toward understanding and change.

We are proud to celebrate our Executive Director, Linda Sankey, who has the honor of attending the Sprott Shaw College Graduation Ceremony this evening as a distinguished guest speaker🎓

Linda will share inspiring words with graduates as they step into the next chapter of their journeys, encouraging them to lead with compassion, resilience, and purpose - values that are at the heart of the work we do at the South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society (SOSBIS).

Her impact doesn’t stop there, tomorrow she will be speaking virtually to students across British Columbia, raising awareness about the critical work happening at SOSBIS and highlighting the importance of June as Brain Injury Awareness Month.

We are especially proud that the City of Penticton officially proclaimed June as Brain Injury Awareness Month, helping shine a light on brain injury education, prevention, and support in our community and beyond 💙

A heartfelt thank you to Zola and Darcy at Sprott Shaw Penticton for including SOSBIS in such a meaningful celebration - we truly appreciate the opportunity to connect with and inspire graduates.

Congratulations to all the graduates - we can’t wait to see the positive impact you’ll make in our community!

🌈 Brain Injury Awareness + Pride in Our Community 🧠

This Pride weekend, we’re coming together not only to celebrate inclusion and diversity, but also to raise awareness about brain injury prevention and support in our region. Brain injury can affect anyone - across all identities - and building a strong, informed, and compassionate community matters.

📍 Today (Sunday, June 7):
The South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society will be at Gyro Park from 1:00–6:00 PM, proudly supporting the Walkin’ & Rollin’ Pride Parade. Stop by to connect, learn more about brain injury prevention, and pick up helpful resources.

By showing up, you’re helping create a safer, more inclusive community where everyone has access to awareness, support, and understanding 🌈

🎉 While you’re downtown, enjoy the Pride celebrations and all the energy happening throughout Penticton, but remember to stay mindful of your surroundings, look out for one another, and help keep our community safe.

The Hidden Reality of Brain Injury - behind the statistics are real people facing real challenges every day.

The hidden impacts:
• 76% experience depression
• 80% experience anxiety
• Up to 82% of people experiencing homelessness have a brain injury history
• Individuals with a TBI are 2.5× more likely to be incarcerated

These numbers tell a story of resilience but also of the urgent need for better support, understanding, and advocacy.

👉 Be part of the change.

Take time this month to learn, share, support, and advocate. Whether it’s raising awareness or supporting organizations like South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society - every action matters.
