I do not typically make posts like this, but a presentation at last evening's Laurentian Valley Council meeting addressed an issue that has been a concern of mine for many years: senior housing and the limited income many seniors must live on.

Many seniors rely solely on Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) benefits. In many cases, these incomes total little more than $1,500 per month, while the cost of a reasonable rental unit often exceeds that amount, not including utilities and other living expenses.

My family has had firsthand experience navigating this challenge while trying to secure suitable housing for a senior parent with a limited income. The process was frustrating and highlighted just how difficult it can be for seniors to find affordable, appropriate accommodations.

At the meeting, Trevor Eggleton, Director of Communications for the Carefor Civic Complex, along with Melanie Freeman, a resident of the Carefor Civic Complex, delivered a presentation outlining many of the challenges seniors currently face. They also spoke about a fundraising initiative that Melanie launched last year to support the complex. Not only did she meet her fundraising goal, but she exceeded it by raising an impressive $20,000.

Melanie is once again leading a fundraising campaign for 2026 and is encouraging 100 people to join her by raising $100 each. Participants are challenged to achieve their personal walking goals between October 1st and December 24th, 2026 while counting their steps. Funds raised will support recreation and wellness programs at both the Carefor Civic Complex and the Mackay Centre, helping to enhance the quality of life for residents. 100 people. $100 each. 50 million steps. Together for one big impact for seniors

I encourage you to take a few moments to watch the LV Council meeting and the presentation ( September 1, 2026 - Township of Laurentian Valley, Committee & Council Meeting) or visit Carefor's social media page (carefor.ca “March with Melanie” ) to learn more about Melanie, her inspiring story, and this worthwhile campaign.

Personally, I am challenging my family, friends, and community members to sign up and count your steps alongside Melanie in support of this important cause.
