📚 Story Time is heading outdoors! 🌳

Join us at Zurcher Park on Tuesday, June 16, from 10:30–11:00 AM for a special Pop-Up Story Time filled with stories, songs, and plenty of smiles.

Come early and enjoy quality time with the Child Care Resource Referral playgroup, where your children can engage in free play and make new friends with other Pemberton families.

Staff Pick Saturday! Jill recommends: The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett.

Robert Jackson Bennett’s The Tainted Cup (2024) is a murder mystery set in an epic fantasy world where spores have been developed into biological enhancements, and the Empire faces threats from world-eating titans from the sea and corruption from within its walls. Dinios Kol, our idealistic protagonist with a mysterious past, has been augmented with the ability to engrave anything to his memory. Kol uses his abilities as the new apprentice to Ana Dolabra, a wackadoo Imperial detective who is part Miss Marple, part Hannibal Lector. Together, they must untangle a grisly murder that embroils them in a deadly chess game amongst the Empire’s elite.

I loved Kol, Dolabra, and the diverse cast of characters. Dolabra is laugh-out-loud hilarious and unsettlingly, and Kol is clever and idealistic, yet holds his own with her. This story will appeal to both hard-core and new fans of high fantasy. Bennett’s Empire feels lived-in and real, with a lot of incredible details that has become his signature. The mystery was compelling and twisty with a satisfactory conclusion. While The Tainted Cup is the first in a three-part series, this book can be read as a standalone. I read this book in both physical and audio format and would highly recommend either.

Staff Pick Saturday! Jacqui recommends: Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston.

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to slip backwards in time? For a time travel story, this narrative is surprisingly relatable. When the real world feels all too serious, escape into this heartfelt novel by Ashley Poston.

There’s a depth here, it’s not just a sappy romance. A thread of grief runs through the story, gently tugging at your heart just enough to make you feel it, without ever becoming overwhelming. It’s bittersweet yet satisfying, leaving you wondering what you might do if you could go back and speak to loved ones who have passed.

There is another layer to this story though; the slow burn between the main characters, Clementine and Iwan, is just the right amount of frustrating. Especially considering falling in love was never part of Clementine’s plan.

Readers can take what they need from this book: enjoy it as a light, comforting escape, or dive deeper into its themes of self-discovery and longing.
