Staff Pick Saturday! Emma recommends: Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy.

Set on a remote island near Antarctica, the story centres around Dominic and his three children who are caretakers on the island where the world’s largest seed bank resides. Once filled with researchers they are now the island’s final inhabitants tasked with preparing as much of the seed bank for evacuation now that the island is threatened by rising sea levels.

When a woman mysteriously washes up on shore, badly injured but alive, it becomes clear that both she and the remaining residents are both connect by and hiding behind lots of secrets.

This is a wonderfully written dark thriller that transports you directly to this storm ravaged island and straight into the lives of it’s residents.

Celebrate a summer of reading with a family-friendly community scavenger hunt that takes participants on an adventure around town before ending back at the library for a party and ice cream.

Please bring your Reading Log with you.

Staff Pick Saturday! Denisa recommends: The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett.

If you’re looking for an immersive story with strong female characters, The Calamity Club is the one for you. It ticks the historical fiction box, taking place during the Great Depression in Oxford, Mississippi, in 1933.

Birdie is unmarried and wants to help her family, Charlie is a woman with a love-fueled mission and Meg, a scrappy eleven-year-old girl, who, despite being labelled unadoptable, refuses to let her spirit be crushed by anyone. Enter Garnett Pittman, the worst type of villain, a spirit crusher, obsessed with control and driven by religious piety.

This story beautifully showcases female solidarity and sisterhood amidst a cruel 1930s American society rife with weaponized social status and institutions that do not recognize the bodily autonomy of women or children. Despite being a thick book, the details and characters make this story a fast read.
