We're pleased to share a positive outcome for Pemberton's event industry.
Earlier this year, concerns were raised after a local event venue was shut down due to an interpretation of a 2016 bylaw affecting events on agricultural land. The issue created uncertainty for venues and the many local businesses that rely on weddings and events throughout the Pemberton Valley.
The Chamber took this issue seriously because of the significant economic impact that weddings and events have on our local economy. Beyond venues themselves, the industry supports accommodations, caterers, transportation providers, photographers, florists, rental companies, restaurants, and many other local businesses.
After hearing from members, we met with SLRD staff to advocate for changes that would better align with Agricultural Land Commission guidance while supporting this important sector of our economy.
On May 27, the SLRD Board approved amendments to:
Allow event tents for up to 90 days
Remove language that prevented existing buildings from being used for events
This outcome demonstrates the value of bringing business concerns forward. When members share challenges, it helps us advocate for practical solutions that support local businesses and strengthen Pemberton's economy.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the conversation and helped move this issue forward.
