As of 12:00 pm today, September 3, the Village of Pemberton's local campfire prohibition has been lifted, in line with the BC Wildfire Service rescindment for the Coastal Fire Centre.

Category 1 campfires are now permitted. A Category 1 campfire must be no larger than 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide.

While campfires are once again allowed, wildfire season is not over. Please continue to use caution:

✅ Never leave a campfire unattended
✅ Keep water and tools nearby
✅ Ensure your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving

⚠️ Please note that other fire restrictions remain in place, including the prohibition of Category 2 and Category 3 open fires, fireworks, burn barrels, burn cages, and other restricted activities and equipment.

As per Fire Prevention Bylaw No. 744, 2013, all open burning within the Village requires a permit. Permits can be obtained at the Pemberton Fire Hall (1350 Aster Street) Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Before lighting a fire, always check current BC Wildfire Service restrictions and any local regulations that may apply.

BC has ENDED the State of Provincial Emergency, effective Aug. 27, due to wildfire.There is no impact to existing States of Local Emergency, Evacuation Orders or Evacuation Alerts.

While the State of Provincial Emergency is ending, wildfire season is not over.

The province will continue to respond to the wildfire situation and support impacted communities.

Residents and visitors in B.C. are urged to:
• Stay prepared and be ready for changing conditions.

• Check conditions before travelling and follow directions from officials.

Effective tomorrow, Friday August 28, at noon PDT the Off Road Vehicle (ORV) prohibition is rescinded in the Southeast, Cariboo, Coastal and Kamloops Fire Centres.

We recognize that ORVs play an important role in recreation, hunting and accessing the outdoors for many. Restrictions are only considered when multiple factors indicate an elevated wildfire risk, heightened wildfire activity and limited capacity to respond to new fire starts.

With improving conditions in some regions of B.C., and cooler wetter weather in the forecast we are now able to rescind these prohibitions. We continue to monitor wildfire risk and prohibitions may be implemented or rescinded as conditions change.

We appreciate the patience and cooperation shown by ORV users during this period. We know many riders take fire prevention seriously and recreate responsibly on established roads and trails. If you're returning to the backcountry, we ask for your support in reporting any new wildfires through our app or by calling *5555.

The Signal Hill wildfire (V30852) began on July 15 resulting in an evacuation alert for the Village of Pemberton and surrounding SLRD.

A significant wind event on July 16 caused rapid changes in fire behaviour, putting our firefighters, training, and years of community FireSmart efforts to the test.

The response brought together Pemberton Fire Rescue, BC Wildfire Service, aviation resources, and mutual aid crews from Whistler, Pemberton Meadows, Sechelt, Gibson and Maple Ridge Fire & Rescue Services. Together, everyone worked toward one goal of protecting our community.

With the fire official out as of August 14, we can reflect on the importance of preparation, strong partnerships and a unified response in bringing about a successful outcome.

We also recognize that many communities across British Columbia have not been as fortunate. With homes and communities devastated by wildfire this season, our thoughts are with everyone affected, and with the firefighters and emergency responders who continue to work across the province.

Our team has deployed for 7 weeks so far this year supporting wildfire response across BC. We’re proud to contribute wherever we can while continuing to support our own community.

To our community, thank you for staying calm, following official updates and trusting the crews working to protect Pemberton. Your patience and support meant a great deal.

And to every firefighter, BC Wildfire Service crew member, pilot and responder who answered the call, thank you for your professionalism, commitment and teamwork.

Given the scope and scale of wildfires currently burning in B.C., and to further protect public safety, recreational off-road vehicle use will be prohibited on Crown land in the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres, as well as parts of the Cariboo and Coastal Fire Centres. This prohibition is effective immediately, as of 12 p.m. (noon) on August 10, 2026.
