Protect what matters most at home.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms monthly, replace batteries when needed, and replace alarms when they reach end-of-life (check the date). Practice a home escape plan, keep exits clear, stay in the kitchen while cooking, and store matches/lighters out of reach. Working alarms + safe habits save lives.

In Ontario,
smoke alarms go in each bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every storey (including basements and non-sleeping levels). CO alarms are mandatory adjacent to every sleeping area, on every storey, and in any room with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages, with new rules effective Jan 1, 2026, adding requirements for every storey and service rooms. Place smoke alarms high (ceiling/wall near ceiling) away from kitchens/bathrooms, and CO alarms at breathing height (wall/ceiling) away from combustion sources, with options for plug-in, battery, or hardwired units.

Smoke Alarm Placement

Where: Inside each bedroom, or outside each sleeping area (hallway), and on every storey of the home (including basements).
How: On the ceiling or high on a wall, as smoke rises.
Avoid: Kitchens, bathrooms, windows, ceiling fans, and heating vents.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm Placement (Effective Jan 1, 2026)

Where:
Adjacent to every sleeping area (hallway outside bedrooms).
On every storey (level) of the home, including basements and non-sleeping floors.
In any service room with a fuel-burning appliance (furnace, water heater) or attached garage.
How: On the wall or ceiling at breathing height (near a person's head when sleeping).
Avoid: Too close to combustion appliances, kitchens, garages, or laundry rooms to prevent false alarms.

Key Reminders

Landlord Responsibility: Landlords must ensure compliance in rental units.
Testing: Test alarms monthly and follow manufacturer instructions.
New Rules: The stricter CO alarm rules became mandatory in Ontario on January 1, 2026, expanding coverage significantly.
