SOS provides programs and services that are accessible and non-judgmental and are available to residents of all ages. We were created by concerned citizens and we continue to operate and build a stronger community thanks to support from our residents.

Did you know that SOS was founded in 1968 by three visionary women determined to support their neighbours in times of need?

Edith Chamberlayne, a school counsellor in District 69 in the late '60s, noticed many local children and families were struggling. Edith approached Pauline Touzeau and Betty Maracchi, and around Edith’s kitchen table the idea for Society of Organized Services was born.

From the beginning, these pioneering women knew the organization needed a stable source of funding. In 1969, they opened SOS Thrift Shop, with proceeds dedicated to helping local residents.

Wherever they went, these remarkable women were affectionately known as “Mrs. SOS.”
