Got old or expired fire extinguishers sitting around?

ABC and CO₂ extinguishers shouldn’t be thrown in regular garbage because they’re still pressurized and may contain chemical agents.

At Rapid CO₂ in Ottawa, we safely:
• Depressurize extinguishers
• Recycle metal components
• Repurpose certain units for training or parts

Fire extinguisher disposal is available for $8.50 per unit and units can be dropped off directly at our facility.

If you use SodaStream regularly, there’s a much cheaper way to refill your cylinders.

With a 5 lb or 20 lb CO₂ tank and the right adapter, you can refill your own cylinders at home and avoid exchange costs altogether.

You’ll need:
• CO₂ tank (hydro tested every 5 years)
• CGA320 to TR21-4 refill adapter
• Scale for safe filling

We break down the full setup here.

We also provide CO₂ refills and hydro testing in Ottawa.

Not all CO₂ cylinder testing methods are the same. When it comes to requalifying CO₂ cylinders—especially for fire extinguishers or compressed gas use—understanding the difference between water jacket testing, proof pressure testing, and ultrasonic examination helps you choose the proper method for safety and compliance. Water jacket testing measures volumetric expansion under pressure, proof pressure checks for visible leaks or deformation using simpler equipment, and ultrasonic testing scans the cylinder wall without pressurizing it.

In Canada, most commercial CO₂ fire extinguishers require water jacket testing, and ultrasonic options may apply for certain aluminum or specialized cylinders.

CO₂ and ABC fire extinguishers are both common fire safety tools, but they are designed for different fire risks and operate in distinct ways. A CO₂ fire extinguisher uses pressurized carbon dioxide gas to smother flames by displacing oxygen and cooling the fuel source. It is best suited for Class B fires involving flammable liquids and Class C fires involving electrical equipment. Because CO₂ leaves no residue, it is ideal for environments with sensitive electronics such as data centers, labs, and commercial kitchens. However, it is not effective on Class A fires and performs poorly outdoors where gas can disperse.

ABC fire extinguishers are multipurpose units filled with a dry chemical powder that interrupts the fire’s chemical reaction. They are designed to fight Class A, B, and C fires, making them a common choice for homes, offices, schools, and warehouses. Their versatility makes them widely recommended, though the powder residue can damage electronics and requires cleanup after use.

Choosing the right extinguisher depends on the hazards present. CO₂ is better for electrical and flammable liquid risks, while ABC offers broad general protection. Many facilities benefit from having both. Regardless of type, regular inspection, servicing, and hydrostatic testing are essential to ensure extinguishers remain safe, compliant, and ready for emergencies.
