The union has grown to include workers in other fields; among them interpreters/translators, information technologists, light industry workers and social services providers, belonging to 27 Locals across the country. Our employers include the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, The Canadian Press and newspapers from coast to coast – the Halifax Chronicle-Herald, Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette, Sudbury Star, Red Deer Advocate and Victoria Times Colonist. The Canadian Region is part of the 600,000-member strong Communications Workers of America. CWA Canada runs it affairs from a national office in Ottawa, with an access to the $400-million CWA strike fund to stand up for our rights. CWA Canada is headed by a full-time Director who is elected to the position. The post is now held by Martin O'Hanlon. The Retirees Council joins CWA Canada in its efforts to advance the economic interests of its members, to raise their standard of living and to guarantee equal job opportunities and human rights. We aim to raise professional standards and promote ethical business and journalistic practices for a better workplace through fairness and respect, fostering friendship and co-operation between all workers.
