This National Indigenous History Month, we’re highlighting the impactful work of Ashley, the Indigenous education coordinator for Northwestern Ontario.

She delivers civic education services across the region and supports First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities beyond it. Guided by an Indigenous lens, her approach is rooted in trust, respect, and meaningful relationships.

“As an Indigenous educator, I stand in a space where our voices were once absent. I stand here so that future generations will see themselves represented, respected and empowered to participate in education and democracy.”

Did you know that Elections Canada works year-round to make voting more accessible?

If you teach students with disabilities, tell them about the supports and services that are available. This can make a big difference when students go to vote for the first time.

This National AccessAbility Week, consider including these accessible voting tools and resources in your civics lessons: https://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=vot&dir=spe/tools&document=index&lang=e

As part of Asian Heritage Month, we’re celebrating the incredible work of Melissa, the regional educator for our recent pilot program in Markham, Ontario.

During Melissa’s time at Elections Canada, she customized the resource Civic Action: Then and Now to teach students in her community about the history of Chinese Canadians.
“By learning how Chinese Canadians took civic action in the past to gain voting rights, students were inspired to think about their own role in making change.”
