On this International Day of Democracy, Finland emphasizes the interlinkages between democracy, human rights and the rule of law. Democracy is an essential component of comprehensive security, and it is enhanced by media literacy and other civic skills.

This year also marks the 120th anniversary of Finland becoming the first country in the world to grant women the universal right to vote and stand for election. Women’s meaningful participation and leadership are essential prerequisites for strong democratic societies, sustainable peace and prosperity.

Supporting democracy is a part of Finland’s foreign and development policy. Our support to Ukraine, through the Council of Europe, International IDEA and the Rule of Law Centre of Finland, helps Ukraine meet European Union standards in the field of the rule of law.

Finnish experiences in multiparty democracy are shared with partner countries through Demo Finland, a unique cooperation organization of all Finnish parliamentary parties.

Free and active civil society fosters democracy and contributes to societal openness, accountability and trust. Finland currently channels a record high share of its Official Development Assistance through Finnish Civil Society Organizations.

As Finnish icebreaker, Arctia Ltd's Nordica, is currently navigating Canadian waters, this seems like the perfect time to share a tour of a Finnish icebreaker.

And the answer? It has a sauna, of course. 🔥

Then again, the odds are pretty good too, as a large share of the world's icebreakers have been designed and built in Finland. 🇫🇮❄️

Hakuaika tehtävään päättyy perjantaina 18.9.2026. Hakijan tulee olla Suomen kansalainen ja hänellä tulee olla Kanadan viranomaisten myöntämä voimassa oleva työ- ja oleskelulupa.

Today, we were proud to welcome the Finnish heavy icebreaker Nordica as it arrived in Canada, marking another important chapter in Finnish-Canadian cooperation. Deputy Head of Mission, Sari Uusi-Rauva attended the welcoming ceremony in the port of St. John’s. The vessel will work in coordination with the Canadian Coast Guard during the 2026 operating season, adding heavy icebreaking and navigation support in Canadian Arctic waters.

As Arctic nations, allies, and close partners, we share expertise in navigating northern conditions and a commitment to a safe, secure, and prosperous Arctic. The arrival of Nordica reflects the growing maritime cooperation between our countries and demonstrates how Arctic partners can work together to strengthen capabilities, support safe navigation, and advance sustainable development in the North.

Fair winds to Nordica!

While visiting her home region of Lapland, Ambassador Hanna-Leena Korteniemi sat down with Lapin Kansa, Lapland's regional newspaper. She spoke about the strong yet growing ties between our countries. One can sense how right at home she feels both in Lapland and also in Canada. She treasures her experiences in Canada during her posting.

Our common northern perspective shapes how we approach challenges and opportunities alike. As Arctic nations, Finland and Canada understand the importance of resilience and sustainable development in the North.

The article also touches on the valuable people-to-people connections that bring our countries closer together, from the Youth Mobility Agreement to cultural exchanges.

And as a proud northerner herself, Ambassador Korteniemi reflected on how her roots in Lapland continue to shape her outlook, underscoring the special connection that Finns and Canadians share through life in the North.

During her time in Helsinki, Ambassador Hanna-Leena Korteniemi had an opportunity to celebrate the strong Finland-Canada relations together with Ambassador of Canada Patrick Hébert.

What stands out most in our relations is not only the strength of the ties between Finland and Canada, but the genuine sense of shared purpose. In today’s world, the sense of connection between friends, partners and allies is more meaningful than ever.

The reception hosted by the Canadian Embassy in Helsinki brought together partners who have elevated the bilateral relationship in their respective fields. Among the guests were representatives of several businesses that had joined President Stubb’s largest-ever trade delegation to Canada in April.

As a token of her appreciation, Ambassador Korteniemi gifted her Canadian counterpart Finland-Canada friendship juice made from apples from her own garden. Also, to soothe any possible homesickness, she had brought some maple syrup cookies.
