The Otaue Shinji (Rice Planting Festival) is held at Osaka's Sumiyoshi Taisha shrine every year on June 14 to pray for an abundant harvest 🌾. Priests perform a purification ritual and distribute the seedlings, and festival participants dressed in traditional garb, begin to plant the seeds, while a variety of rituals, dances and songs are performed. This ancient Shinto festival ⛩️ is said to have taken place each year since 211, and it's one of the most famous rice planting festivals in Japan because it faithfully reproduces ancient procedures and rituals in a grand ceremonial style.

Have you seen Japanese rice planting festivals?

The skeleton flower (Diphylleia grayi) is a flower native to northern and central Japan. Its petals, usually white when in bloom from June to July, are known for becoming translucent when in contact with water 💧. These beautiful little flowers and their translucent 'skeleton' petals can be observed during Japan's rainy season. ☔️

Did you know? Japan 🇯🇵 has a nationwide campaign called "The Campaign for a Brighter Society(社会を明るくする運動)."

Every July, communities across Japan come together to promote rehabilitation and crime prevention. From neighborhoods and schools to public spaces, volunteers, community groups, and government agencies unite to make this vision a reality. 🤝

Because everyone deserves a second chance. 🌟 Society grows stronger when we help people rebuild their lives — working toward a warmer, more compassionate society where no one is left behind.

Have you heard of saba-zushi (鯖寿司), Kyoto-style mackerel sushi? 🐟🍣

Unlike sushi elsewhere in Japan, this traditional specialty was developed in Kyoto, a city far from the sea, as a way to preserve and savour the rich flavour of mackerel. Kyoto ate salted or dried fish that could make the journey from the Sea of Japan, through the Sabakaido (Mackerel Highway) from modern-day Fukui Prefecture. Sabazushi is made with mackerel that's been lightly pickled in salt, then filleted. The fish is marinated in vinegar and carefully pressed with seasoned rice, often wrapped in bamboo leaves to enhance its aroma.

If you visit Kyoto, this local delicacy is a must-try!
