Ozu City is known as “Little Kyoto” because it retains historical Japanese buildings, allowing visitors to experience Japanese townscapes and culture🏯. Amidst population decline, the community and tourism have united to preserve the historical townscape, and Ozu's efforts were recognized with a Silver Award at the Global Destinations Sustainability Awards🍀.

In the neighboring town of Uchiko, the production of Japanese paper and plant-based candles 🕯️called mokuro (Japanese candles) has been passed down. Depending on the time of day, you can observe traditional work scenes. Japanese candles and candle holders are also popular souvenirs.

Rishiri Island is a small island off the northern tip of Hokkaido, most famous for Mount Rishiri ⛰, a dormant volcano often referred to as 'Rishiri Fuji' because its conical shape resembles Mt. Fuji 🗻. Rishiri Island offers plenty of great hiking and walking opportunities, particularly from June to August when the island's alpine flora is in bloom. The climb up Mount Rishiri (1,721 m), open from late June to early October, is quite challenging but offers stunning views.

Planning a trip to Japan this fall to see the fall colours? 🍂 The Japan Meteorological Corporation released its first autumn foliage forecast maps 🗺️ earlier this month, estimating the best viewing dates for red momiji (Japanese maple) leaves 🍁 and yellow ginkgo tree leaves across the country. The fall colours 'front' moves from north to south. You can expect red and yellow leaves from early November in Hokkaido (as early as October in some areas) and at high elevations, and in the last few days of November in Tokyo.

The Embassy of Japan in Canada introduced new ways of enjoying matcha that bridge tradition and modernity, featuring Mr. Nakamura Mitsuhiro, certified instructor of traditional Japanese tea ceremony and Chief Mixologist at the Park Hyatt London River Thames. At this event, he introduced matcha-based cocktails, blending traditional matcha with a modern drinking experience. The event began with a traditional tea ceremony demonstration, followed by an introduction to matcha cocktails along with tastings and networking with Sushi.
