Restorers work to invisibly, or very closely, restore antique carpets.
Conservators repair so repairs are left 'as is' to stand out from the original. A detailed document is required to document each step, each material.
It was a good, thorough education for me early on.
I gained respect for the thinking behind historical items in Museum settings. ( I don't believe these rugs are walked on now in the setting ? ) They were originally discovered rolled up in the attic by pure chance and by some miracle no moth damage at all. Primarily normal worn sides *
I found pictures of the two 1920s Heriz in use in the 1930s in what was then, the seignory club. Now it is returned to its original historical state as Manoire Papineau, right beside the famous largest Log Hotel Fairmont; Chateau Montebello in Quebec.
It was there I found a display of historical photos of the great HERIZ carpets !

Here’s something you don’t often see.

A pair of 32’ long fine Indo-Nains

Found in Sabat’s huge warehouse in Stuttgart Germany in 2003.

( now a part of Germanies oriental rug history )

Both were bought and shipped to Canada by Canadian Rug Traders. One is then seen in a Canadian foreign affairs wharehouse, getting prepped by us to send to our Canadian Embassy in Japan. It is for the Dining Room in Tokyo *

( and it was not big enough, so I created a system whereby plain bordered woven wool 4’ sections could be safely attached along both ends using a wide Velcro system which allowed the whole enormous affair to lay flat and still look good ! ).

Found this photo.
WHY ? ! !
It looks cut, flipped and sewn end to end ?
I have no idea why. I can only imagine in my summer work stream that I likely had to pull it apart, and weave it back together.....

A collector contacted me with very, very specific requests for how she wanted this antique Sarough repaired, or secured.
She wanted the ends cabled and bound, but exactly as it was with no further removal of material if at all possible.
This was the result using a nicely matching old wool to finish it.

This beautiful little Hereke carpet was prepped for wall mounting. A thin flat pine board has the rougher Velcro glued and stapled to it so it remains solid over time. A fine linen cord for textile work is used to weave through the carpet with each stitch carefully pulled into the back of the rug so you cannot see any indication of it from the front. ( Just finger tight so no rippling or divots )
This went back to the client so I do not have a photo of it on the wall.
It sits hanging, seemingly like magic and there is space to lay the long fringe behind, along the top edge of the wall moulding.
Everything can be moved with a family and everything can be undone to return the rug to completely original if desired.
