Daisy on the Go is a social initiative travelling to locations across the County of Renfrew and designed to provide a welcoming and enjoyable experience for both people with early to moderate dementia and their caregivers.

We had a wonderful time chatting with people and sharing information at Gloucester-Southgate Coun. Jessica Bradley’s annual 55+ Afternoon Tea.

Over 200 attended the June 9 event at the Cohere Centre on Uplands Drive. Some had connected with us before while some were learning for the first time about The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County and our programs in support of people living with dementia and caregivers. We also had the chance to catch up with fellow local non-profits, including Volunteer Ottawa and the Ottawa branch of the Huntington Society of Canada.

Nous avons passé un moment formidable à discuter avec les participants et à échanger des informations lors du thé annuel 55+ organisé par la conseillère municipale de Gloucester-Southgate, Jessica Bradley.

Plus de 200 personnes ont assisté à cet événement qui s’est tenu le 9 juin au Cohere Centre, sur Uplands Drive. Certaines nous connaissaient déjà, tandis que d’autres découvraient pour la première fois la Société de la démence d’Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew, ainsi que nos programmes destinés à soutenir les personnes vivant avec la démence et leurs proches aidants.

Nous avons également eu l’occasion de retrouver d’autres organismes à but non lucratif locaux, notamment Bénévoles Ottawa et la section d’Ottawa de la Société Huntington du Canada.

Un grand merci à la conseillère Bradley et à son équipe pour leur invitation et leur soutien !

Driving decisions can be incredibly emotional and complex for people living with dementia and their families and caregivers.

It’s encouraging to see an evidence-informed tool that supports informed, compassionate conversations and planning. It’s also heartening to see it was developed with input from a person living with dementia.

“I was waiting to make a right-hand turn and three or four kids on bicycles suddenly appeared. Was my failure to see these kids coming because of my dementia?”

Experiences like this are common for people living with dementia who are trying to understand when—and whether—to stop driving.

To support them, Drs. Mark Rapoport and Gary Naglie, together with partners like Ron Posno, who lives with Alzheimer’s disease, developed the Driving and Dementia Roadmap. This evidence-informed online resource helps people living with dementia, their caregivers, and their health care providers navigate driving decisions.

Summer is approaching and The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County marks the end of National AccessAbility Week by highlighting the education webinar “Understanding air travel and dementia” .

Researchers Valentina Primossi And Ali Chiarelli gave this presentation in November 2025 exploring what helps make air travel more accessible for people living with dementia and their travel companions, while also examining what more needs to be done.

The discussion covers:
• Why travelling is important
• Tips on handling travel challenges
• Concerns over stigma and disclosure of diagnosis
• Issues of respectful language and interior design
• Current services and initiatives

L'été approche à grand pas et la Société de la démence d'Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew clôt la Semaine nationale de l'accessibilité en mettant l'accent sur le thème « Comprendre les voyages en avion et la démence ».

Be part of an education session where people with dementia and their caregivers can learn side by side. 👥

First Connections is The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County's two-part educational series designed to help caregivers and people living with dementia learn together.

This program is dementia friendly. That means it’s presented in an inclusive, supportive atmosphere where information is shared clearly and at a slower pace. Extra time is offered for questions, reflection, and meaningful participation.

In this series, you will:
• Learn about early-stage dementia and how it affects the brain
• Build strategies to manage emotions and navigate challenges
• Connect with others and access helpful resources and supports

First Connections is presented in English. Premières connexions is the same program offered in French.

Premières connexions est une série éducative en deux parties conçue pour aider les proches aidants et les personnes vivant avec la démence à apprendre ensemble.

Ce programme est adapté aux personnes atteintes de démence. Cela signifie qu’il se déroule dans une atmosphère inclusive et bienveillante, où les informations sont transmises clairement et à un rythme plus lent. Du temps supplémentaire est prévu pour les questions, la réflexion et une participation constructive.

Dans cette série, vous pourrez :

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County truly appreciated the warm welcome and generosity from everyone at All Seniors Care Living Centres Résidence Chapel Hill Retirement Residence during our “Let’s Talk About Dementia” presentation there June 3.

Through a 50/50 draw, a gift basket raffle and playing ‘donation Bingo’, the residents there raised $418 to support people living with dementia and their caregivers. We’re so grateful for everyone’s efforts.

In the attached image, residents Ghislaine and Bill, along with Chapel Hill Residence Health and Wellness Director Allison Boraman, present the donation cheque to Dementia Society volunteer Jennifer Imerson (who delivered the presentation).

We’re always happy to share information about dementia and ways to support people living with dementia and their caregivers.

We’re looking forward to the upcoming sessions at Résidence Cité Parkway Retirement Residence June 9 and Résidence Beacon Heights Retirement Residence June 10!

La Société de la démence d’Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew a apprécié l’accueil chaleureux et la générosité de tout le personnel de la résidence All Seniors Care Chapel Hill lors de notre présentation « Parlons de la démence » (en anglais), qui s’y est tenue le 3 juin.

Grâce à un tirage 50/50, à une tombola de paniers-cadeaux et à un « bingo de dons », les résidents ont récolté 418 $ pour venir en aide aux personnes atteintes de démence et à leurs aidants. Nous sommes très reconnaissants des efforts de chacun.

Sur la photo ci-jointe, les résidents Ghislaine et Bill, en compagnie d’Allison Boraman, directrice de la santé et du bien-être de la résidence Chapel Hill, remettent le chèque de don à Jennifer Imerson, bénévole de la Société de la démence (qui a animé la présentation).

Nous sommes toujours ravis de partager des informations sur la démence et sur les moyens de soutenir les personnes vivant avec la démence et leurs proches aidants.

This is a great reminder for National AccessAbility Week. The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County often mention the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower - Canada lanyard program to our clients. We've heard lots of positive feedback about the difference it can make and how it can ease concerns over travel.

Ceci est un excellent rappel à l'occasion de la Semaine nationale de l'accessibilité. La Société de la démence d'Ottawa et du comté de Renfrew discute souvent avec nos clients des lanières du programme « Fleur de tournesol pour les handicaps invisibles. Nous avons reçu de nombreux commentaires positifs sur l'impact que ce programme peut avoir et sur la façon dont il peut apaiser les inquiétudes liées aux déplacements.
