Inuit Women’s Voices. Inuit-Led Solutions.

Pauktuutit centers the voices of Inuit women, girls and gender-diverse Inuit and advocates for the inclusion of Inuit-specific approaches in response to the MMIWG2S+ crisis.

Our recommendations call for Inuit women, girls, and gender-diverse Inuit to be meaningfully centred as leaders and decision-makers in MMIWG2S+ responses, alongside stronger accountability, research, and sustained action to prevent violence and support safer communities.

This year marks 10 years since the release of the National Inuit Su***de Prevention Strategy. In this time, ITK has drawn attention to the need to reduce su***de risk factors and increase protective factors through effective policy design. We continue to work to increase equity for Inuit in areas such as housing, cost of living, access to healthcare and child welfare. With direction from our Board of Directors, ITK continues to work through the Inuit-Crown partnership to ensure programs and initiatives intended to benefit Inuit actually do benefit Inuit. We have developed many partnerships along the way, including with organizations like Kids Help Phone to ensure Inuit-specific supports are in place for Inuit youth.

Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada continues to work hard to ensure that the next federal budget delivers for Inuit women.

In our September Pre-Budget Submission, we’re calling on the federal government to move beyond promises and take concrete, sustained action to advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples while supporting Inuit-led solutions that strengthen daily lives, protect futures, and build a just and united economy for all Canadians.

We urge the federal government to:
1. Build strong, secure communities by improving access to affordable housing, safe spaces, and second-stage housing for Inuit women fleeing violence.
2. Leave no one behind – Invest in culturally grounded, health and well-being systems and services that reflect the rights, realities and distinct needs of Inuit women, girls, and gender-diverse Inuit.
3. Support Inuit women-led economic development in urban centres and across Inuit Nunangat.
4. Recognize and resource Pauktuutit’s Inuit-Specific Gender-Based Analysis Plus (ISGBA+) framework as a mandatory, results-tracked tool applied to all legislation, policies and programs affecting Inuit women, girls, and gender-diverse Inuit.
5. Recognize that true sovereignty begins with the safety of Inuit women, girls, and gender-diverse Inuit. Invest in Inuit-led, gender responsive solutions that address their unique needs.
