Ottawa marks International Overdose Awareness Day in a city without a single safe consumption and treatment site.

Every August 31 since 2001, International Overdose Awareness Day has brought people together to grieve and demand better. Our shelter was proud to stand with those who use substances and organizations such as ours who support them.

This year's theme, "25 Years On. Still Needed," landed with particular weight in Ottawa, a city that spent this year's commemoration without its last safe consumption and treatment site.

Between 2020 and 2025 alone, Ottawa’s safe consumption sites managed over 475,000 visits, served more than 53,000 unique individuals, and intervened in 7,667 overdose emergencies. With 85% of overdoses previously stabilized on-site without requiring 911, defunding this survival infrastructure leaves our community without its frontline shield, driving preventable deaths and shifting the burden directly onto already overstretched paramedics and shelter staff.

Grief must be met with accountability. True community safety and meaningful addiction recovery cannot begin if we refuse to keep our neighbours alive today so they have the chance to choose treatment tomorrow. We continue to call on Queen’s Park to follow public health evidence, restore funding for low-barrier harm reduction services, and build an integrated continuum of care that treats human dignity and survival as non-negotiable.

This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for neighbours like Patrick*.

Last year, Patrick came to The Mission for a warm holiday meal he couldn’t afford. With your support, he joined our Food Services Training Program, earned new certifications, and found meaningful work.

Today, he’s thriving.

You can make that journey possible for more neighbours this Thanksgiving.

Give a warm meal and a fresh start.

We had a wonderful weekend at Capital Pride! 🌈

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to say hello, chat with our team, and learn about the work of The Ottawa Mission and Chef Ric's.

The Ottawa Mission stands with and supports members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community as we all work together towards a future without homelessness and food insecurity.

Our doors are open to everyone, judgement free, today and every day. 💙

Happy Capital Pride, ! 🌈

We’re proud to share that The Ottawa Mission & Chef Ric's will be marching in this year’s Capital Pride • Fierté dans la Capitale Parade, on Sunday, August 30th! 🏳️‍🌈

We'll also be participating in Pride's Street Festival tomorrow and Sunday, so come pay us a visit at our festival table, located on Bank St between Lewis and Gilmour St. 👋

The Ottawa Mission stands with and supports members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community—where, sadly, there is an overrepresentation of people experiencing homelessness.

Our doors are open to everyone, judgement free, today and every day. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Looking forward to seeing you this weekend.

🥳Street Festival: Sat & Sun | 12-8PM
🎉Parade: Sunday | 1–4 PM Starting at Wellington & Booth

There's nothing like some tie-dye to brighten up a day! 👕

Last week, we joined Belong Ottawa's Centre 454 and put on our annual Tie-Dye Extravaganza event, where clients of both The Ottawa Mission and Centre 454 gathered to make their own personal tie-dye shirts.

By the end of the day, the only thing shining brighter than the t-shirts were the smiles on everyone's faces. 😁

Thank you to Kathy, our MCAO Stepping Stones Learning Centre teacher, for leading another edition of this colourful social event, and thank you to Centre 454 for hosting us in their wonderful courtyard! 🔴🔵🟢🟡

"You're sitting exactly where I was, almost ten years ago."

When Chris shared those words with graduates of our Addiction and Trauma Services programs, he spoke from lived experience.

A decade ago, Chris was a client at The Mission. His recovery wasn't linear, but with determination, and the support of our addiction and trauma programs, he built a new future. Today, he's come full circle, helping others as a counsellor.

"The Mission gives you the tools you need to save yourself."

Thanks to your generosity, people like Chris have the opportunity to rebuild their lives and, in turn, inspire others to believe recovery is possible.

In his own words, hear how you helped Hakim access free job training through our Maintenance Services Training Program (MSTP), unlocking a promising new career and a pathway out of hardship for him and his young son.

Thank you for helping Hakim and so many others like him.
