📚 Literacy is more than reading and writing. It helps people understand and be understood, communicate with confidence, think critically, participate in their communities, and make informed decisions about their lives.

For learners of all ages, literacy can open doors to greater participation, connection, and opportunity. Everyone deserves the chance to develop the skills they ned to read, learn, communicate, and shape their own future.

SLSC is proud to endorse this year’s International Literacy Day campaign and add our voice to a national effort highlighting the role literacy plays in creating opportunities for inclusion.

We’re pleased to support the literacy organizations leading this work in communities across Canada and to help amplify their efforts.

📢 Call for Participants: Research Study

The CanAfro Research Institute is seeking to interview Black men in Canada who have experienced violence such as a hate crime, intimate partner violence, assault, or other forms of harm, and were subsequently charged or faced legal scrutiny as a result of this incident. The study is also interested in hearing from individuals who have experienced systemic bias or discrimination within legal, policing, and/or institutional systems.

Participants will take part in a confidential 60-90 minute interview (by phone, video, or in person) and will receive a $50 honorarium, as well as access to free legal navigation and peer support services.

This important research aims to inform policy, improve legal training, and strengthen supports for Black male survivors.
