Some Ukrainian children arrived in Poland carrying more than a backpack. They also carry fear. Trauma. Silence.

🏫 At the Extraordinary School (Niezwyczajna Szkoła) in Józefów near Warsaw, around 200 children with disabilities – including 40 from Ukraine – learn, heal, and grow together. Since 2022, Ukrainian-speaking teachers and a Ukrainian psychotherapist have helped children who fled the war feel safe, understood, and included.

💬 "Some children who arrived unable to walk or speak now move independently and communicate. That's our greatest success," says the school's director, Izabela Popławska.

Here, Polish and Ukrainian staff work side by side to give every child the care, warmth, and support they deserve. Because resilience grows where people care for one another. 🇵🇱🤝🇺🇦

🤝 Today, Chargée d'Affaires a.i. Arletta Brzozowska met with Poland's National Wheelchair Basketball Team ahead of their schedule at the Ottawa 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships.

The team is in excellent spirits and ready for the challenge ahead.

🏀 We wish our athletes successful games, and we hope to see you all there, cheering on the Polish team!

🌐 Poland is supporting greater access to sport for people with disabilities through dedicated programmes and funding. Both Poland and Canada are also parties to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

On 1 September 1939, the new school year for millions of children in Poland did not begin as planned. In the early hours of that morning, N**i Germany invaded Poland. On 17 September, the Soviet Union followed. The two regimes acted in collaboration to strip Poland of its sovereignty.

These unprovoked invasions marked the beginning of the Second World War, a conflict that would go on to engulf the entire globe and claim tens of millions of lives, soldiers and civilians alike, including six million Polish citizens.

We pay tribute to all those who gave their lives in defence of Poland and of peace around the world, and, drawing on the lessons of the past, we remember that freedom must never be taken for granted.

This past Sunday, alongside diplomatic partners, friends, and local civil rights organisations, we walked in Ottawa’s Capital Pride parade under this year’s theme, “Together, We Shine”, a vibrant celebration of our shared commitment to dignity and equality for all.

We joined Global Affairs Canada, the Delegation of the European Union to Canada, and a wider diplomatic community, including the diplomatic missions of 18 EU Member States, in supporting equal rights for everyone. We co-sponsored the “Diplomats for Equality 2026” joint statement, issued in support of 2SLGBTQI+ rights.
