Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa Together with over 1000 volunteers, we foster, facilitate and support one-to-one and group mentoring relationships with children in need of a special friend.

As Canada’s leading child and youth mentoring charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters facilitates life-changing relationships that inspire and empower young people to reach their full potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa is the premier mentoring organization in Ottawa that provides rewarding, life-changing, fun experiences for children/youth through programs that enrich the lives of all involved.

We serve over 1000 children and youth annually in programs supported by volunteers based on the principles of safe and quality programming. We focus on enabling children to hope and dream and realize their potential.

Last year, there were 130,104 hours spent building relationships through mentorship.

That adds up to 5,421 full days, or nearly 14 years worth of connection, support, and time shared between mentors and young people… all done in just one year!

Every conversation, every outing, and every moment spent together helped build confidence, connection, and brighter futures for youth in our community.

Meet Phillip Shaer

For Phil, mentorship has always gone beyond professional development, it’s about helping young people feel supported, encouraged, and confident in their future. Over the years, he has dedicated time to mentoring young lawyers and supporting organizations focused on children and youth, making BBBSO an organization that closely aligns with both his personal values and commitment to giving back.

With more than twenty years of experience in law and executive leadership, Phil has held senior roles with companies including MOSAID Technologies Inc. and Canopy Growth Corporation, and currently serves as General Counsel at Invert Inc. Beyond his professional work, he has volunteered with organizations including Frontier College and the Ottawa Public Library Foundation, helping support literacy, learning, and community initiatives for children and families.

Whether through leadership, mentorship, or volunteer work, Phil continues to bring a strong sense of community and advocacy to the BBBSO Board.

Meet Michael Purcell

Michael understands mentorship from both perspectives, as someone who has been guided by mentors and as someone who now helps support and encourage others. He believes these relationships can have a lasting impact not only on young people, but on the strength and connection of an entire community. Through his work with BBBSO, Michael hopes to help create meaningful mentor-mentee relationships that inspire future generations to give back in the same way.

Michael is a Crown prosecutor based in Ottawa and currently serves as Counsel in the Complex Prosecutions Bureau with Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General. Before joining the Ministry in 2017, he practiced as a criminal defence lawyer. Outside the courtroom, Michael has remained deeply involved in community advocacy, previously serving on the board of the John Howard Society of Ottawa and volunteering as an Ambassador for the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto.

Michael’s dedication to mentorship, community support, and creating positive change continues to make him a valued member of the BBBSO Board.

We saw a 30% increase in participation in our PRISM program.

That means more 2SLGBTQIA+ youth in our community were able to access safe, supportive mentorship and meaningful connections where they could feel seen, valued, and empowered to be themselves.

The growing need for programs like PRISM shows just how important inclusive spaces and supportive relationships are for young people.

With your support, we can continue expanding programs like PRISM and ensure even more youth have access to the mentorship and community they deserve. Donate today https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/4020.
