For Immediate Release: Majority of Students Vote in Favour of BDS
March 14, 2018
Ottawa, ON
Yesterday, our motion to bring Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) at the General Assembly of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) was voted “FOR” by 241, surpassing the votes “AGAINST” of 231. Although the motion did not pass, this moment remains a victory for all students who stand in solidarity with Palestinian human rights.
At the meeting, the motion calling for the SFUO to implement BDS was voted for by a simple majority of undergraduate students. The federation’s constitution requires that constitutional motions such as this one be voted in by ⅔ of the vote being “FOR” the motion. Nonetheless, we outnumbered and out-organized Zionist organizations on campus and beyond in mobilizing our allies and stood together in solidarity with Palestine. This moment will propel our efforts and push us to strive for greater heights in the Palestinian struggle for freedom, peace, and decolonization.
Gabi Ghannoum, President Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) uOttawa, said: “The result of the GA says a lot about the community at the University of Ottawa. Although the final outcome wasn’t exactly what we wanted, we still had the simple majority. BDS was something people wanted, and they showed that through mobilizing and simply being present and voicing their concerns through their vote. Palestinians are starting to have a voice at uOttawa, and it’s only getting louder. The Zionist narrative of peace can only exist under the condition of occupation. Colonial peace is not what we strive for, and we now have our chance to change that narrative.”
SPHR uOttawa would like to thank our friends at Revolutionary Students Movement, who brought movement forward, Independent Jewish Voices Canada, and the broader student population. This is only the beginning for our movement at the University of Ottawa, and look forward to a victory at the Board of Administration in April of 2018.
SPHR uOttawa will continue to work with students and our campus partners to raise awareness about the injustices committed by Israel, denounce zionism and promote BDS on our campus.
