You never know when your training will matter most.

During HMCS Charlottetownā€™s port visit to Singapore as part of Operation HORIZON, Sailor 2nd Class (S2) Hassan Khalid stepped in to help while off duty when he encountered a person in medical distress while ashore.

Working alongside two other bystanders, S2 Khalid helped provide critical first aid, including CPR, the use of an automated external defibrillator, and oxygen ventilation, until paramedics arrived. His quick thinking and decisive actions helped give the patient a vital chance while emergency services were on their way.

For his response, S2 Khalid was recognized with the Singapore Civil Defence Forceā€™s Community Lifesaver Award.

to August 24, 1990, when HMC Ships Athabaskan, Protecteur, and Terra Nova sailed from Halifax to participate in Operation FRICTION, the United Nations operation in the Persian Gulf War.

Over a busy two-week period, the ships and their five embarked Sea King helicopters were hastily upgraded with a range of surface warfare and self-defence capabilities.

They started operations on October 1. As the mission evolved, Commodore Ken Summers decided the Canadian ships should move from the safer Arabian Sea to the more exposed central Persian Gulf, northeast of Bahrain, to play a more active role.

We're looking for CAF members from all environments, occupations, and ranks to volunteer as speakers and engage with schools, community groups, and organizations across Canada during Veteransā€™ Week.
