June 1, 2026, marked the 150th anniversary of the Royal Military College of Canada, honouring the service and contribution of its graduates to our country, and recognizing the dedication of the staff and faculty of this internationally recognized military university.

This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on 150 years of RMC’s operation and to celebrate its evolution as a strong, proud, equitable, diverse, and inclusive national military institution, where we strive to instill the Canadian Armed Forces ethos and values to the next generation of leaders.

Today marks the beginning of National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize and reflect on the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.

Throughout the year, but this month in particular, we recognize the Indigenous members of the Canadian Armed Forces and celebrate their service, leadership, and the important role they play within our organization and across the country.

LGen Stephen Kelsey, Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, met with his Finnish counterpart, LGen Vesa Virtanen, during his visit to Ottawa as part of a broader North American engagement.

Their discussions focused on strengthening Canada–Finland defence cooperation, with particular attention to Arctic operations, enhanced information sharing, and developing a shared situational awareness. As NATO Allies with extensive experience operating in northern and Arctic environments, both nations are committed to deepening interoperability and advancing joint capabilities.

The visit also underscores the importance of strong transatlantic partnerships in maintaining security and readiness.

On this day in history, the Boer War (also known as the South African War) officially ended in 1902 with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging, securing a British victory. This conflict marked Canada’s first overseas war.

More than 7,300 Canadians volunteered to serve, including eight Canadian Nursing Sisters. Canadian troops distinguished themselves in several key engagements, and five soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery.

When the first 1,000 Canadian volunteers set sail for Cape Town, South Africa, in the autumn of 1899, many expected to be home by Christmas. Instead, they became involved in a harsh guerrilla conflict that lasted nearly three years and claimed the lives of 270 Canadians.
