The Canada Council Art Bank makes contemporary artwork available to a wide public across the country through our three programs: corporate art rental, loans to museums and outreach. With more than 17,000 artworks by over 3,000 artists, the Art Bank has the largest collection of contemporary Canadian art anywhere. It houses paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and prints by emerging and established artists, including a significant number of Indigenous artworks. What can the same land and same teachings look like when they are reflected through different hands, materials and memories?

In the second instalment of our blog series inspired by the 2026 Arctic Arts Summit, third-generation Inuvialuk carver and jewellery maker Priscilla Boulay, originally from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, reflects on art from the North through works by Northwest Territories-based artists Levi MacDonald, Martine Kotchea, Robert Kussy, Miriam (Nanurluk) Qiyuk and Kablusiak.

En mémoire de David Thauberger

Le Conseil des arts du Canada, y compris la Banque d’art, se joint à la grande communauté artistique pour rendre hommage à David Thauberger (1948–2026), célèbre artiste de la Saskatchewan.

Au cours de sa carrière remarquable, David Thauberger a transformé les maisons, les façades de magasins et les paysages des Prairies en images emblématiques de la vie canadienne. Ses couleurs vives, ses formes nettes et sa compréhension incomparable du lieu ont mis la Saskatchewan en vedette auprès de publics au pays et à l’étranger, lui valant une reconnaissance nationale et internationale dans les domaines de la peinture, de la céramique et de la gravure.

Parmi les nombreux honneurs reçus, David Thauberger a été nommé membre de l’Ordre du Canada en 2008. Son engagement de longue date envers la communauté artistique comprend son service au sein du conseil d’administration du Conseil des arts du Canada de 2002 à 2008 et son service comme membre du comité consultatif sur l’art de la Banque d’art du Conseil des arts de 1999 à 2002.

La Banque d’art du Conseil des arts a l’honneur de détenir bon nombre de ses œuvres, couvrant une période allant des années 1970 à 2010. Ensemble, elles offrent un témoignage remarquable d’un artiste qui savait trouver l’extraordinaire dans l’ordinaire et dont la vision et les contributions distinctes continueront de façonner le paysage culturel du Canada pendant des années.

Remembering David Thauberger

The Canada Council for the Arts, including the Art Bank, joins the broader arts community in paying tribute to renowned Saskatchewan artist David Thauberger (1948–2026).

Over a remarkable career, Thauberger transformed the houses, storefronts and landscapes of the Prairies into enduring images of Canadian life. His bold colours, crisp forms and unmistakable sense of place brought Saskatchewan into focus for audiences at home and abroad, earning him national and international recognition across painting, ceramics and printmaking.

Among his many honours, Thauberger was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2008. His longstanding commitment to the arts community included service on the Canada Council for the Arts’ Board of Directors from 2002 to 2008 and as a member of the Canada Council Art Bank’s Art Advisory Committee from 1999 to 2002.

The Canada Council Art Bank is honoured to hold many of his works, spanning a period from the 1970s to 2010. Together, they offer a vivid record of an artist who found the extraordinary in the ordinary, and whose distinct vision and contributions will continue to shape Canada’s cultural landscape for years to come.

💻Join us for an edit-a-thon at the Art Bank!

Co-hosted by the Canada Council Art Bank and the Canadian BIPOC Artists Rolodex, this collaborative session invites participants to research, write, and help create artist entries for the Rolodex—a digital platform and living network that showcases the work of Black, Indigenous, People of Colour artists.

The afternoon includes a tour of the Art Bank, guided support, and space for discussion, reflection and community-building.

Help expand the Rolodex and support a more inclusive Canadian art history.

Le Rolodex est une plateforme numérique et un réseau évolutif qui met en valeur les œuvres d’artistes des communautés noires, autochtones et de couleur.

L’après-midi comprend une visite de la Banque d’art, du soutien et un accompagnement et un espace communautaire de discussion et de réflexion.

Aidez à enrichir le Rolodex et à rendre l’histoire de l’art du Canada plus inclusive.

Brandon Hoax’s MOVEMARROW (2019-2022) explores Indigenous sexual sovereignty through pow wow materialities. The full suite features photographs of nine harnesses created using ribbon regalia sewing techniques that bring together elements of fetishwear and pow wow regalia.

Each harness was gifted to urban Indigenous artists as an invitation to create an artistic response. Through their participation, the project became an expression of connection, conversation, creativity and mutual appreciation.

Dans MOVEMARROW (2019-2022), Brandon Hoax explore la souveraineté se****le autochtone à travers l’iconographie du pow-wow. La série complète présente des photographies de neuf harnais créés en utilisant des techniques de couture de rubans cérémoniels qui suggèrent des éléments de vêtements fétichistes et de tenues de pow-wow.

Chaque harnais a été offert à des artistes autochtones de régions urbaines dans l’idée de les inviter à créer une réponse artistique. Grâce à la participation de ces artistes, le projet est devenu une expression de liens, de conversation, de créativité et d’appréciation mutuelle.

Pride is about belonging, authenticity and creating a space for every story. 🌈 These values are deeply important to the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada and are reflected in the artists and works represented in the Art Bank collection.

In The Green and the Grey (2019), Melissa Doherty presents a closely cropped hedge that overwhelms the canvas, rendering nature not as a backdrop but as a subject to be seen. Despite being unnaturally confined, the hedge spills onto the sidewalk, refusing to stay within imposed boundaries.

As a gay person who didn’t fit into the cultural box that she was raised in, Doherty imagined the hedge as a subject that can’t adhere to confines, and whose growth proves relentless. The painted illusion of texture, creating a virtual reality, expresses the struggle between authenticity and facade.



La fierté, c’est le sentiment d’appartenance, l’authenticité et la volonté de faire une place à chaque histoire. 🌈 Ces valeurs sont profondément importantes pour le Conseil des arts du Canada et se reflètent dans les artistes et les œuvres qui font partie de la collection de la Banque d’art.

En tant que personne homose****le qui ne trouvait pas sa place dans le cadre culturel dans lequel elle avait été élevée, Melissa Doherty a conçu la haie comme un sujet qui ne peut se plier à aucune contrainte et dont la croissance est incessante. L’illusion de texture créée par la peinture, qui donne naissance à une réalité virtuelle, exprime la lutte entre l’authenticité et l’apparence.

Congratulations to Kosisochukwu Nnebe on winning the Visual Arts category of the Joseph S. Stauffer Prize, awarded by the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada to emerging and mid-career artists from Canada who exhibit strong artistic potential in music, visual arts and literature.

A Nigerian-Canadian conceptual artist and researcher, Nnebe creates internationally exhibited work that reimagines historical narratives through the experiences and perspectives of Black women.

The Canada Council Art Bank is honoured to have “Black Woman #6 (Hyper/in/visibility)” (2017) in its collection and on display through the art rental service.

Félicitations à Kosisochukwu Nnebe d’avoir remporté un prix Joseph-S.-Stauffer dans la catégorie des arts visuels. Le Conseil des arts du Canada remet les prix Joseph-S.-Stauffer à des artistes du Canada en début ou en milieu de carrière dans les domaines de la musique, des arts visuels ou de la littérature, et qui font preuve d’un fort potentiel artistique.

Join other amateur photographers across Canada to celebrate the life that thrives in the spaces where land, water and all species meet.

The Edge Conditions | Inawendiwin exhibition brings together works by artists who reflect on the dynamic threshold between water and land as sites of ecological vitality, cultural memory and evolving relationships to landscape.

To highlight these themes, we are inviting members of the public across the country to reflect on and explore these relationships together.

Contribute to a rotating collection of landscape photographs for the video wall at the Canada Council for the Arts | Conseil des arts du Canada at 150 Elgin Street, in Ottawa.
