Don’t miss it! Qillaniq: Circumpolar Indigenous Contemporary Art Exhibition!

The exhibition, the first and largest of its kind in the world, is co-curated by an all-Indigenous team from the countries of the circumpolar world and includes works by 70 artists, including four from Sweden, as well as from other Nordic countries.

The Qillaniq exhibition offers us a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of the cultural strength of the Indigenous Peoples in the circumpolar world, inspired by the natural beauty of the Arctic lands and rooted in the resilience of the peoples who inhabit them.

A visit is highly recommended. Qillaniq runs until 20 September 2026. Stay tuned for updates!

Have you ever experienced Ottawa from the river perspective?

Last week, the Embassy staff gathered for a summer retreat day and ventured onto the water in two big canoes together with experienced guides from ONEC. Paddling along the Ottawa River, we took in the amazing scenery and learned more about the history of the city and some of its impressive landmarks – while also getting a good outdoors exercise!

Earlier this week, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard presented Sweden’s new Arctic Strategy.

The Strategy reflects a new security situation – the most serious for Sweden since the Second World War. The Strategy reinforces Swedish Arctic policy by defining the links between security policy, resilient communities, the economy, and the environment and climate.

The aim of Sweden’s Arctic policy is a peaceful and secure Arctic, with sustainable and resilient communities and reduced environmental and climate impact.

On Monday 25 May, HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden presented the annual Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) to Canadian picture book artist Jon Klassen, in Stockholm.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature.

Jon Klassen (1981) is a Canadian illustrator and picture book artist. His breakout book I Want My Hat Back is a layered, ingeniously told tale of ownership and morality. Klassen's body of work forms a subtle, astute, and humorous investigation into existential questions, where feelings of anticipation, suspense, and shock play a central role.

In I Want My Hat Back a bear loses his beloved hat. The bear asks all the other animals, but no one has seen it. I Want My Hat Back is the first book in Jon Klassen's so-called Hat Trilogy.
