Watson's Mill Manotick Watson’s Mill is an active 1860s water-powered flour and grist mill and part of historic Dickinson Square along the Rideau River in Manotick.

The WMMI mandate is to preserve Watson's Mill as a working heritage grist and flour mill, and as an educational, social and cultural focal point for the community and visitors. Mill: Summer hours: daily May through October and other times by appointment. Tours and admission by donation. The Watson's Mill office is located on the 2nd floor of the Carriage Shed: office hours are weekdays, 9am to 5pm, year round. In addition, public restrooms and first aid station are available in this building. The Carriage Shed houses the Used Book Sale, which is entirely run by an amazing team of volunteers. The book sale is open daily from May 1st to mid-November. Winter activities in the Carriage Shed include PD day camps, w**e tastings, lecture series, workshops and more! We are also very active in our community: monthly concert series at Manotick United Church, occasional quiz night at Manotick Mill Tavern, and we participate in all the festivals! Watson’s Mill, Dickinson House and the Used Book Store will be open this Labour Day long weekend! Say farewell to summer with a fresh loaf of honey oat bread, a Sunday milling demonstration and finding a new book series to fill the autumn months.🍂

⏰Hours:
Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6: 10:00am-4:45pm
Monday, September 7: 10:00am-4:00pm

As the seasons change, so do our visitation hours! Starting on Tuesday, September 8th, Watson’s Mill and Dickinson House will only be open on Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00am-4:00pm. The Used Book Store will remain open Wednesday-Sunday, from 10:00am-4:00pm

Hello everybody, I am Jacob Heyman, the new Collections Technician here at Watson’s Mill and for the next few months I’ll be posting about some of the interesting artifacts and historical events from around the area.

This month we will be looking at Society Pages. When reading through older newspapers you may find a small section listing less newsworthy events surrounding people in the community such as a family going on a picnic, somebody going on vacation, or someone moving away. They were the yester-years equivalent to Facebook and social media. Locals would submit to the local paper what they were up to as a way of keeping people informed of what they were doing! Here are some of our favourite excerpts that we’ve come across! 📰

Give a warm welcome to Kristen for this weeks’ post! Let’s learn a bit more about this first-time Heritage Interpreter at Dickinson Square!

1. What are you studying?
I’m going into my second year of history with a minor in American Sign Language at Carleton University.

2. What excites you most about working at Dickinson Square?
I’m excited to share my love of history and Manotick with locals and tourists alike. Its neat being able to learn more about regional history and see the mill in action!

3. What historical moment do you find most interesting?
It’s always changing, but right now a historical moment I find very interesting is the fall of the Berlin Wall. I recently took a class on the Cold War and learning about everyday life was under communism is fascinating to me.

4. What do you do in your spare time?
I like to fill my spare time by baking and seeing my friends. I’m also a competitive Irish dancer which consumes a fair amount of my time.

5. What’s your favourite museum?
It’s so hard to pick just one, but I would probably say my favourite museum is Upper Canada Village. I love the feeling of being immersed in another time period and seeing how people lived back then!

Please be aware that there continues to be scammers impersonating WMMI to solicit “applications” and payments for our upcoming Christmas Craft Market.
The fraudulent emails are being sent from a Gmail address.

We believe the scam started on
Wednesday, August 12th, 2026.

WMMI has not sent out any calls for vendors since July and our first round of applications is now closed.
However, we are still accepting completed PDF applications for the vendor waitlist. Please contact [email protected] to receive a form.

At this time, we have not made any decisions about vendor acceptances. Our decision emails will be sent out in September from the [email protected] email address.

WMMI IS NOT REQUESTING PAYMENT AT THIS TIME.

WMMI will never ask for PayPal payments or contact vendors through social media comments or DMs.

Please be vigilant in checking sender addresses for emails relating to our market. If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of communications, please feel free to contact our office by phone at 613-692-6455, or [email protected].

Join us for a Daily Life Demonstration inspired by our newest exhibit Lumbering On: A Story of Logging In The Ottawa Region on Sunday, August 30 from 1:00-3:00pm. Taking place on the lawn of the Dickinson House, this DLD will feature a mini rafting demo, as well as a short presentation from our Collections Technician Jacob! “Lumbering On” will only be on display for a few more weeks, so be sure to stop by while you still can! 🪓

Another week means another opportunity for ! Today we’re getting to know our Heritage Interpreter, Charlie!

1. What are you studying?
After finishing my undergraduate degree in Environmental Science and Geography, I will be continuing my education in a Master's Degree in Geography, focusing on Urban Climate Science!

2. What excites you most about working at Dickinson Square?
After two years of working with Watson's Mill, I've found some of my favourite moments are in pulling off some fun, village-wide events (Dickinson Days, Duck Drop!), and seeing the community's excitement!

3. What historical moment do you find most interesting?
My favourite historical moment has to be when Marie Tharp created the first map of the ocean floor from sonar measurements, completely by hand!

4. What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy cross-stitch and other sewing ventures, as well as reading and tabletop games.

5. What’s your favourite museum?
Not a specific museum, but I love the open-air museums located all around the U.K. that contain medieval villages.
