ICYMI: Economic weakness combined with rising inflation is a dilemma for monetary policy. To balance these risks, we've held our policy rate at 2.25%.

However, uncertainty is unusually high and monetary policy may need to be nimble. We are committed to maintaining Canadians’ confidence in price stability through this period of global upheaval.

We have maintained the policy interest rate at 2.25%. Economic weakness combined with rising inflation is a dilemma for monetary policy. Uncertainty is unusually high and risks could shift. For now, holding the policy rate unchanged balances risks.

We will be watching closely for evidence of a broadening in price pressures. The Bank of Canada is committed to keeping inflation close to the 2% target over time.

It’s been 91 years since the Bank of Canada issued its first bank notes. 💵

In 1935, the Bank of Canada introduced its First Series, establishing a centralized national currency. Notably, the First Series used dual unilingual issues, printing separately in English and French, rather than bilingually.

June is National Indigenous History Month.

Several of Canada’s recent bank notes include visual elements that speak to the importance of Indigenous representation.

The vertical $10 bill features an eagle feather. For many First Nations peoples in Canada, the eagle feather symbolizes truth, power and freedom.

The commemorative Canada 150 $10 note features a portrait of Akay-na-muka (James Gladstone), Canada's first senator of First Nations origin, a Métis Assomption sash pattern and Owl's Bouquet, a work by Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak.

The polymer $50 note has the word “Arctic” in Inuktitut on the back.
