Getting diverse apprentices through the door is only the beginning.

The real question is: How do we make sure they stay, succeed and advance?

Canada is making progress in bringing more women, Indigenous peoples and equity-deserving groups into the skilled trades. But getting people through the door is only the beginning.

Join us October 28 at 1:00 p.m. ET for a members-only webinar with Dr. Wendy Cukier, Founder and Academic Director of the Diversity Institute, as she explores what happens after the recruitment campaign ends—and why some apprentices leave before completing their training.

Meet the Youth Apprenticeship Council 🌟

Meet Wade Coulter, a recently certified red seal refrigeration mechanic from Ontario and member of the inaugural Youth Apprenticeship Council.

Wade’s apprenticeship journey has taught him the importance of perseverance, mentorship and having someone in your corner when navigating the trades.

After being guided toward the trades by his high school guidance counsellor, Wade has had “zero regrets” about choosing this career path. Now, he wants to be that same friendly face for other young people exploring their futures.

“I would like to be able to take my personal experiences in the trades and help make positive change for both present and future apprentices.”

Through his leadership and volunteer experiences, Wade is committed to giving back and helping create stronger pathways for the next generation of apprentices.

We’re excited to have Wade’s perspective at the table.

Meet the Youth Apprenticeship Council 🌟

Meet Shane Clennett, a Cook apprentice from Yukon and member of the Youth Apprenticeship Council.

Shane brings a strong passion for making the skilled trades more accessible to young people, particularly in rural and remote communities.

As a current apprentice, Shane has experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing apprenticeship training, including long waitlists and limited course options that fit an apprentice’s schedule.

With experience as a high school student council president, a cooking mentor and youth instructor, Shane is passionate about helping more young people see the trades as a rewarding career option.

“Many young people have no clue that a career in the trades is an option, where they can put their skills, talents and mindset out onto the market and make a good wage.”

Through the Youth Apprenticeship Council, Shane is looking forward to collaborating with young apprentices from across Canada and helping shape a stronger apprenticeship system for the next generation.

Meet the Youth Apprenticeship Council 🌟

We’re excited to introduce Phoebe Clark, a Steamfitter from the Lower Mainland, British Columbia and member of the inaugural Youth Apprenticeship Council.

“We don’t need apprentices to simply get through their training; we need to give them the support to thrive beyond that and stay in the industry.”

Phoebe recently completed her apprenticeship while working in the Sea to Sky area and is currently working at Seaspan as part of UA Local 170. Her experience in the trades has given her firsthand insight into the importance of strong mentorship, quality training, clear communication, and supportive workplaces.

Phoebe is passionate about strengthening the apprenticeship experience for the next generation. She believes apprentices should be paired with qualified, engaged mentors who are prepared to teach - not simply supervise - and that structured mentorship, regular progress check-ins, and clear learning objectives can help apprentices build confidence, skills, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Through her work with the Youth Apprenticeship Council, Phoebe is focused on improving mentorship and training standards, strengthening accountability, and helping create a more supportive and sustainable skilled trades workforce.

Because the future of the skilled trades isn’t just about getting more people into the industry, it’s about giving them a reason to stay. 🔧
