Shepherds of Good Hope fosters hope and reduces harm in Ottawa by supporting people experiencing homelessness and people who are vulnerably housed in our community. We have a number of innovative programs including: our emergency Women's and Men's shelters, our Transitional Emergency Shelter Program, our Managed Alcohol Program, our Soup Kitchen, and our Case Management Services. We also operate f

Bubblegum. Popcorn. Pizza. Extra recess. Hydroponic basil. 🌱🍿🍕

What connects them? They are all part of how students at St. Brigid’s Catholic School rally their school community in support of Shepherds of Good Hope.

In this episode of Cup of Hope, Meighan Hartley, Chief Development Officer at the Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation, sits down with Rola Tibshirani, Principal of St. Brigid’s Catholic School.

Rola shares how students dream up their own fundraising initiatives, inspire their classmates to participate and exceed their goals year after year. They also get to see their support in action. Basil grown through hydroponics at the school made its way to our Community Kitchen, where it was used in meals served to neighbours.

The connection goes back further than you might expect. Shepherds of Good Hope first began in the basement of St. Brigid’s Church, bringing this partnership full circle.
Rola describes empathy as “an active verb.” At St. Bridget’s, that verb comes with plenty of student voice, imagination and, occasionally, extra recess.

Shepherds of Good Hope is in support of International Overdoes Awareness Day Ottawa, happening today, Monday August 31, 2026, at the human rights memorial on Elgin Street.

This event will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm with speakers and representations of those we have lost to overdose this year. Following this event at 1:00pm there will be a 4Km walk through downtown, past closed supervised consumption sites, ending on Parliament Hill.

This event is especially important to raise awareness of substance use disorder and overdose, with it marking 10 years since a national emergency was declared.

Les Bergers de l’espoir soutiennent la Journée internationale de sensibilisation aux surdoses à Ottawa, qui aura lieu le lundi 31 août 2026 au Monument canadien pour les droits de la personne, sur la rue Elgin.

L’événement se déroulera de 11 h à 13 h. Des personnes prendront la parole et un hommage sera rendu à celles et ceux qui ont perdu la vie à la suite d’une surdose cette année.

À 13 h, une marche de 4 km aura lieu. Le parcours traversera le centre-ville, en passant devant des sites de consommation supervisée maintenant fermés, avant de se terminer sur la Colline du Parlement.

Cet événement est l’occasion de sensibiliser le public aux troubles liés à l’usage de substances et aux surdoses. Cette année marque également les 10 ans de la déclaration d’une urgence nationale.

The back of a Giant Tiger truck opened outside our Community Kitchen, and box after box of blueberry muffins started coming out. Five thousand of them!

That incredible surprise was only the beginning of the day. More than 20 Giant Tiger team members joined us to prepare and serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, with burgers, chicken fingers, onion rings and plenty of blueberry muffins on the menu.

Anyone who has watched this team work together knows why our residents and community members are always so happy to welcome them back. Everyone has a role, the team is incredibly organized, and their leaders work right alongside them. They move with ease, support one another and still make time for conversations, laughter and connection.

Giant Tiger generously donated all the food served throughout the day. But beyond the food, they gave their time, energy and genuine care to every person they met.
Thank you to the entire Giant Tiger team for another wonderful day in our Community Kitchen. We are so grateful for everything you continue to bring to our community.

For Bhagwan Gupta and Monica Gupta, service is not simply something they do. It is part of who they are.

In this episode of Cup of Hope, Meighan Hartley, Chief Development Officer of the Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation, sits down with the father-in-law and daughter-in-law duo to reflect on community, responsibility and giving back.

For more than 31 years, Bhagwan Gupta has shared his time as a volunteer and raising funds for Shepherds of Good Hope. He has also received various awards for his volunteer work. Through cooking meals and by guiding SEVA group in its community service, he continues to bring people together. Monica Gupta, ICCC Ottawa director and women's program chair, youth mentor, and community leader has been helping the community for the last 25 years by creating opportunities for women to feel connected and empowered through workshops, seminars and community initiatives.

While they contribute in different ways, they are guided by the same belief that service to others is a way of life. For them, karma means recognizing the responsibility we all share toward our community.

As the saying goes in Hindi, “Manav Seva hi Madhav Seva hai.” Service to humanity is service to God.

Feeling at home is often found in the little things: having a space that feels like your own, seeing familiar faces and spending time doing something you love.

For Helen, one of those joys is creating art.

Helen lives in one of Shepherds of Good Hope’s supportive housing residences, where a caring team is close by and wraparound support is part of her everyday life.

“The staff is remarkable. They give you hope and lots of encouragement.”

That encouragement has helped Helen discover something she truly enjoys. Art brings a sense of calm to her days, and she takes great pride in every piece she finishes. Each one carries a little of Helen’s warmth, creativity and spirit.

It is wonderful to see Helen making her space her own and filling her days with more of what brings her happiness.

We are so glad Helen calls Shepherds of Good Hope home.
