We are incredibly honoured to share that Choices Shelter and Support Services has been named the winner of the Nonprofit of the Year Award through the Dufferin Board of Trade.

To be nominated was an honour. To become a finalist was something we were deeply proud of. But to be selected as the recipient of this award amongst 15 incredible nonprofits doing meaningful work throughout our community is truly difficult to put into words.

This recognition reflects years of hard work, advocacy, growth, and determination from our team. Every day, our staff support some of the most vulnerable members of our community while navigating stigma, misconceptions, barriers, and the realities that come with this work. It is not always easy, but our team continues to show up with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

Over the last several years, we have worked tirelessly to advocate for sustainable funding and financial stability in order to grow and expand programs and services that meet the increasingly complex needs within our community. This award is a reflection of that work, the strength of our partnerships, and the incredible dedication of our staff and supporters.

We are deeply grateful for this recognition and congratulate all of the nominees and finalists who continue to make a meaningful impact across Dufferin County. We are proud to stand alongside such inspiring organizations.

We are incredibly honoured to share that Choices Shelter and Support Services has been nominated for the Dufferin Board of Trade’s Nonprofit of the Year award.

We want to sincerely thank our community for this nomination and for the continued support you have shown our organization. To be recognized in this way means so much to our team, and it reflects the power of a community that believes in supporting one another.

Over the last year, our organization has continued to grow in meaningful ways — expanding programs, strengthening partnerships, increasing support for unhoused individuals, and responding to the evolving needs of Dufferin County. None of this would be possible without the support of our staff, donors, community partners, and community members who stand beside us every day.

We are proud to serve Dufferin County and proud to continue working toward positive change in our community. Thank you for believing in our mission and for helping us make an impact together. 💚

We’re looking to partner with local landlords who are open to renting to individuals and families currently staying in our shelter or living rough.

Our clients come with ongoing supports, case management, and a team invested in long-term housing stability. When housing works, everyone wins — tenants, landlords, and the community.

If you have a unit coming available and are open to a conversation, we’d love to connect.

We want to give a huge shoutout to Joanne Willson for her incredible donation of household items! Joanne was able to fill an entire van full with items from pots and pans to cleaning supplies and so much more. These products help support clients in their transition from homelessness to their own space!

We also want to give a special shoutout to staff Amanda who spent hours organizing all of these items so they are easily ready to use!

For many, homelessness doesn’t start in adulthood—it begins in their youth. Family conflict, abuse, or aging out of care can push young people into unstable situations, often before they’ve had the chance to finish school or build independence. Many don’t end up in shelters right away either—they’re couch surfing, staying in unsafe environments, or relying on others just to get by.

Early experiences of homelessness can have lasting effects, increasing the risk of mental health challenges, disrupted education, and long-term housing instability. The earlier it starts, the harder it is to break the cycle. That’s why prevention and support for youth is so critical. When we intervene early, we don’t just address homelessness—we help prevent it from becoming a lifetime experience.
