๐ŸŒณ If you feel like youโ€™ve been hearing more and more about ticks and Lyme disease in the last few years, you arenโ€™t imagining it.

Climate change is resulting in rising temperatures and longer summers, increasing the instances of diseases from blood-feeding pests like mosquitoes and ticks.

Knowing how to prevent ticks from biting you, your family and your pets, as well as what to do if you find a tick, will help keep you and your loved ones healthy.

Visit the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health to learn how to protect you and your family from tick bites.

๐Ÿ It's !

No Mow May is a call to avoid mowing our lawns this month and give our local wildlife a chance to thrive.

Long grass provides a safe haven for insects, birds, and small mammals, which are essential to maintaining a healthy ecosystem.

Nectar sources can be scarce in early spring, so a flower-filled lawn can provide a much needed buffet.

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of nature in your yard this May!

๐ŸŒป We're bring back a post from the Climate Stories of Dufferin archive to inspire you this gardening season!

"I decided that native plants and food plants would be the focus as I gradually replaced a large lawn. This focus has not prevented me from also including much-loved, non-native plants to provide beauty, satisfy nostalgia, supply fragrance, or provide beautiful season-long blooms favoured by bees.

Our lawn was never a monoculture of manicured grass but even though it was full of flowering clover and weeds (and still is on paths and where the dogs play), it only provided a few centimeters of vertical ecosystem and did little to store water or build soil nutrients.

By using leaves, compost, manure, and specific cover crop plants to build organic matter in the soil, I am improving its ability to store water and provide nutrients for the many trees, shrubs, and plants that replaced most of the lawn. Edible plants provide a bounty of fruit and vegetables for my family which reduces our dependence on food transported long distances."

๐ŸŒŽ Happy Earth Month!

Earth Month began with Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator Ga***rd Nelson organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues.

By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the world.

Today, Earth Day is one of the largest observances in the world, marked by more than a billion people every year as a day of action to change human behavior and create global, national and local policy changes.

Itโ€™s a lot to fit into a single day and so, more recently, the month of April has been dedicated as Earth Month!

Tomorrow is

Every year, at 8:30 pm on the last Saturday of March, supporters in over 190 countries and territories unite, taking action on and raising awareness of the issues facing our one home.

After switching off your lights, here are a few ways you can spend the Hour:

๏ฟฝ Reconnect with nature by taking an evening walk. Don't forget to bring a flashlight, phone, and let others know where you are going beforehand.

๏ฟฝ Spend time with loved ones. Play board games, cook, listen to music, sing karaoke or dance the night away together. Got young ones? Read a book together in the candlelight!

๏ฟฝ Connect with local climate action. Explore the Climate Hub, read local climate stories, and write your own (๏ฟฝ in bio)

Share your Earth Hour experience with us by tagging us and using the hashtag so we can share your posts and stories!

๐ŸŒŠ

Regularly check your eavestroughs, window wells and well covers, downspouts, floor drains, storm drains, and storm ditches/culverts.

Clearing debris like leaves, twigs, branches, or garbage ensures that water can flow where it needs to go and keeps it from building up near your home.
