🔴 Red Dress Day: Honoring MMIW+

May 5th is recognized as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People (MMIW+). ❤️
MMIW+ stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and gender-diverse people, and this day brings awareness to the ongoing impacts of violence experienced by Indigenous communities.
It is a time to honor, remember, and acknowledge the lives of those who are missing or have been taken, and to stand with the families and communities who continue to carry this grief and seek justice. ❤️
The red dress has become a powerful and widely recognized symbol representing those who are missing and the presence that should still be with us.
MMIW+ is a call to raise awareness, acknowledge the impacts, support one another, and continue advocating for safety, justice, and meaningful change.❤️

Student safety, Wellbeing and Title and Rights within Tsq̓éscen̓úlecw

Kukpi7 Helen Henderson, Chief Administrative Officer Laurelee Bennett, Education Senior Manager Michelle Archie, and Family Wellness Senior Manager Carmon Pete met with School District #27 Superintendent Cheryl Lenardon to discuss the safety and wellbeing of our children attending public schools.

This meeting followed the recent alleged threat involving the local high school. The Superintendent confirmed that our students were safe throughout the situation, and the meeting focused on strengthening communication and coordinated supports for our students and families.

As Title and Rights holders within Tsq̓éscen̓úlecw, the Nation carries a responsibility to advocate for the safety, wellbeing, and success of our students wherever they learn. The discussion focused on strengthening collaboration and developing clear protocols to ensure responses involving our students are timely, culturally safe, and supportive of both students and families.

The conversation was guided by the teachings of T'k̓wenm7íple7tens re Kíkwe – Law of the Valerian Plant, reminding us to plan ahead and wrapping supports around our Stsmelt (children), Tuwiwt (youth), Kw’séltkten (family) and Yecwmeníleten (caregivers)

Kukpi7 shared:
“Our children deserve to feel safe, supported, and proud of who they are wherever they learn. As a Nation, we have a responsibility to lead the way in creating positive change for all children within Tsq̓éscen̓úlecw. By working together with our neighbors and partners, we can build stronger systems that support the wellbeing of our students today and for generations to come.”

Leadership will continue working with the school district to strengthen relationships and ensure culturally safe supports for our students and families.
