Niá:wen for helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and truthful space for all.

06/08/2026

The Mohawk Council and people of Kanehsatà:ke would like to offer their most sincere condolences to all family and friends on the recent passing of Mr. Frank Marquis, caretaker at Tioweró:ton for many years.

This position was a great responsibility, which he undertook with dedication, pride, and love of the territory. Patrolling the lakes and surrounding areas to help guard against poachers or polluters was no easy task, and working through the winter isolation could sometimes be a hardship. We could all be reassured that if we got lost or injured, Frank Marquis would act with urgent professionalism to make sure we came home safely.
Frank Marquis will be missed by many.

The legacy he left behind is one of love and care, in those who took his place and who now care for Tioweró:ton with the same love and dedication professionalism that make it a special place for us all.

Rest in peace at the Creator’s house,

The Mohawk Council of Kanehsatà:ke (MCK) and Kanehsatake Perimeter Security (KPS), wish to inform the community that the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has opened a suspicious death investigation following the discovery of a young man’s body at the former Sulpician school (the Brothers location), on May 29, 2026.

The discovery was reported to KPS, who subsequently notified the SQ and established security around the area. At this time, the body recovered has not yet been identified. An autopsy will therefore be conducted in the coming days to determine the cause of death and assist with identification efforts.

In the coming days, SQ investigators and personnel will be in and around the community, to examine the circumstances surrounding the death. We ask community members to please allow investigators the time and space needed to complete their work. Anyone with information that could assist investigators is invited to please contact the SQ.
More information will be shared as it becomes available. Niá:wen for your cooperation,

The Mohawk Council of Kanehsatà:ke & Kanehsatà:ke Perimeter Security

The Mohawk Council of Kanehsatà:ke (MCK) would like to inform community members that representatives from the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité durable (MTMD) have been and will be in the community in the coming days, to conduct traffic and speed monitoring on Route 344.

This is part of an ongoing technical study related to the community’s long-standing request to reduce the speed limit on Route 344, a concern that has been raised consistently over several years due to important safety risks. The MCK has been advocating for this change for a long time. Many community members have also expressed concerns about speeding, pedestrian safety, and traffic conditions on this route, and this study is one of the next steps required in the analysis process.

As part of the data-gathering process, community members may notice equipment and MTMD staff along the road, so we ask for your vigilance and patience so this work gets done without delay.
