What Trauma Looks Like in our Workplaces
This is not easy to say… but it needs to be said.
In our communities, workplace trauma is not separate from history.
It carries the weight of colonization, lateral violence, and unresolved harm.
It shows up in silence—when truth isn’t spoken.
In fear—when speaking up risks relationships.
In harm being minimized to “keep the peace.”
In leadership avoiding accountability.
It shows up when people are carrying community pain
and workplace harm at the same time.
Sometimes we call it “just the way things are.”
But it isn’t.
It is trauma repeating itself inside our own spaces.
And that is the hardest truth to hold—
because we are not just workers.
We are relatives. We are community. We carry history.
Being trauma-informed is not a training or a label.
It is the courage to name harm, repair relationships,
and lead with a good mind—not just good intentions.

Closing quote:
“We cannot heal our communities while reproducing harm in the places we work.”

Leadership silence is not neutrality—it’s harm.
Silence is not neutral.
Silence is a decision.
When organizational leadership chooses not to respond—to calls, emails, or serious concerns—especially in moments of tension or conflict, it sends a message:
you are not important enough to acknowledge.
That is not trauma-informed.
That is harm.

For many people, especially those carrying lived and intergenerational trauma, silence can trigger anxiety, distrust, and feelings of abandonment. It erodes relationships and weakens the integrity of the organization.

We cannot claim trauma-informed practice while avoiding communication.

We cannot speak about safety while creating uncertainty and disconnection.

From an Indigenous lens, leadership is relational responsibility.
It means showing up, responding, and staying accountable—especially when conversations are difficult.

Avoidance is not leadership.

Silence is not care.

If we are serious about doing better, then we must do better.

Respond.
Acknowledge.
Be accountable.

Leading with Awareness: The Importance of Trauma-Informed Leadership
Being trauma-informed is not just a practice for frontline workers—it is a responsibility of leadership. The tone, values, and safety of an organization are shaped from the top. When leaders understand the impact of trauma, they create environments where people feel seen, respected, and supported rather than judged or controlled. Trauma-informed leadership recognizes that behaviour is often a response to experience, not a problem to be managed. It shifts organizations from compliance to connection, from reactivity to reflection, and from harm to healing.
When leadership is not trauma-informed, workplaces can unintentionally replicate the very harms they aim to address. But when leaders commit to this approach, they build trust, strengthen teams, and create conditions where both staff and community can truly thrive.
“Safe organizations are built by leaders who understand that how we lead matters as much as what we do.”

Gabriel Consulting offers teaching and training on understanding and addressing lateral violence within Indigenous communities, organizations, and teams. Our approach is rooted in trauma-informed practice and Indigenous teachings, recognizing that lateral violence is not who we are—it is a response to historical and ongoing harm.

Through guided dialogue, reflective exercises, and practical tools, we support individuals and teams to build accountability, strengthen communication, and restore relational safety.

“We are not meant to harm one another—our teachings remind us how to live in respect, responsibility, and a good mind.”

Our work creates space for truth, healing, and the rebuilding of trust in our communities.

Reflecting on decolonization, it is a daily task to reflect on words and actions . Am I coming from my Kanieke’ha:ke values or am I repeating colonial patterns. Coming from a good mind space asks one to decolonize words and actions. We each have responsibility to self, to ancestors and to our nation. Can we fulfill this responsibility? It is hard work but a burden we must fulfill.

THE MESSENGER OF JOYFUL HEARTS

The elders say
some spirits are woven from light—
born to remind us
that even the smallest presence
can carry the greatest hope.

They move between moments
like a whispered blessing,
teaching that joy is not a possession
but a way of seeing,
a choice made again and again
no matter how heavy the world becomes.

Their path is quick,
yet never careless;
they gather sweetness
from places long forgotten,
and return it
to those who no longer remember
how to lift their gaze.

And in their gentle passing,
they leave a truth behind—
that life is brightest
when the heart stays open,
and gratitude, once awakened,
can guide a soul
better than any map of earth or sky.
