The members of the Oakville East NDP Riding Association stand with our comrades in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Canada Post is a crown corporation intended to serve a national strategic objective: to provide access to communications for all Canadians. While technology has advanced since Canada Post was founded, the service infrastructure it has built in its near-160 year history remains operational.
Postal workers--our neighbours--have a plan to retool Canada Post to better serve our communities’ needs. Their solutions (https://www.deliveringcommunitypower.ca/our_plan) include:
- Postal banking. Banking services were offered by Canada Post until 1968. Reintroducing this would provide financial services in rural and underserved communities and introduce competition in our banking industry.
- Elder check-ins. Postal workers are already out and about in our communities. By allotting time on their routes, postal workers can visit with our neighbours who opt into this service. Canada Post can be a point of contact between people and healthcare services, helping seniors remain in their homes.
- High speed internet. Canada Post has a legacy--and a mandate--of connecting Canadians. Canada Post offices are secure locations and can be renovated to host high speed internet servers. This will provide high speed internet to the 3.2M Canadians who do not have access and lower our internet bills by introducing competition.
In contrast, Canada Post executives are resisting innovation in an attempt to remain relevant in mail delivery. Their ideas are limited to wages that do not keep up with inflation, precarious gig work, and closing postal offices, thereby taking jobs out of our communities.
The bosses do not believe in democratic workplaces nor in a fair collective bargaining process. They share this belief with their allies in the Liberal and the Conservative parties; allies they can count on to send workers back to work and run roughshod over our constitutional right to collective bargaining.
New Democrats will always stand with workers on the picket lines, on the protest lines, and anywhere workers are fighting to win economic freedom.
