Norway House Cree Nation

Norway House Cree Nation Transforming our community into a true sovereign Nation. Norway House is one of the largest First Nation communities in Manitoba and has a rich history.

It is situated on the confluence of the Nelson River and Lake Winnipeg, 456 kilometers north of Winnipeg, Manitoba; approximately 800 kilometers by road. The population consists of 6,918 Band members and approximately 600 community members living in the adjacent off-reserve community. Norway House played a fundamental role in establishing the economic foundation of Manitoba & Canada during the fur trade era. It first emerged as a significant post in 1821 when the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Northwest Company merged and established a fur-trading post near the outlet of Lake Winnipeg in 1814. The Norway House post was named after Norwegian labourers who build the post in recognition for their exceptional building skills. Today, Norway House Cree Nation is recognized as a very progressive community and boasts a large number of amenities, including a hospital, personal care home, state-of-the-art educational facility, post-secondary facility, public work facilities and business establishments. The leadership believes in self-reliance and sustainability through economic development. Various economic ventures have been undertaken by Norway House Cree Nation, such as the Pharmacy, Dental clinic, bus transportation, Cellular & Communications System, York Boat Inn, Kistapinanihk Shopping Mall & Kinosao Sipi Multiplex Recreation Centre. Norway House Cree Nation has strong emphasis on education because it is the key component to a self-sustaining community in every aspect. It is very important to secure a better future for the youth and for generations yet unborn by initiating quality education and economic development strategies & projects which will capture the Vision of Norway House Cree Nation.

Norway House Cree Nation Public Water System Update
September 5 2026

We are committed to keeping the community informed about the progress of the water
system cleaning. With the mainline now cleared, our focus has shifted entirely to the water tank (cistern) system. We are working quickly to identify households whose water tanks may have been contaminated.

Any water tank (cistern) that tests positive will be disinfected promptly. Crews are working to service as many households per day as possible. Homes with residents receiving dialysis are being prioritized for completion.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation.

Norway House Cree Nation Public Water System Update
September 3 2026

Following confirmation that the Water mainline boil water advisory has been lifted, we are currently focusing our efforts on addressing the contamination of select household water tanks in NHCN.

The community remains under a Precautionary Boil Water Advisory for Household Water Tanks Only while ongoing testing and cleaning activities continue throughout NHCN.

Residents are encouraged to cooperate with staff when they arrive to conduct testing and cleaning. Your assistance is essential in helping us complete this work as quickly as possible.

As a precaution, residents with household water tanks should use bottled water for drinking, cooking, and other consumption purposes. Water from household tanks may continue to be used for non-consumption purposes. We also recommend boiling any water intended for consumption until further notice.

Free drinking water is available at:
Osborne and Sons Laundromat Water Supply Station (9:00 AM to 9:00 PM)

Rossville Pump House (9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, first right after the four-way intersection heading toward HBO)

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we continue working to eliminate contamination from the household water tank systems. Further updates will be provided as they become available.

A Vision Decades in the Making: New Sea Falls Bridge Project Moves Forward Toward Reality

Chief Season Roulette and Council are excited to move forward with the new bridge structure on PR 373 over the Nelson River East Channel near Sea Falls. This project has been pursued by the community for the past couple of decades and is now expected to become a reality within the next three years.

On August 24, 2026, the Province of Manitoba, represented by Kevin Leclair of Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure, visited Norway House along with Landmark Planning & Design and Tetra Tech, the engagement and engineering consultants working on the project. The team met with Norway House Cree Nation Chief and Council, as well as community staff.

The purpose of the visit was to introduce the project team to the newly elected leadership and to review information that had been shared during community meetings held in the fall of 2024, winter 2024/2025, and summer 2025. As part of the functional design process, four roadway alignment options were examined in detail to accommodate the new bridge. Landmark Planning explained how the evaluation criteria were applied to each option and how the preferred alignment was selected.

Recently, Chief Roulette, along with Councillors Tim Folster, Eddie Albert, and Alfred Laugher, accompanied the group to Sea Falls. Austin Apetagon, NOMVD, was also present to conduct drone surveying and imaging for the new bridge. We have been informed that Norway House will be receiving the second-largest bridge in Manitoba.

The next steps for the project were also reviewed. Representatives from Manitoba, Landmark Planning, and Tetra Tech will be returning to Norway House, and community meetings will resume in early 2027. Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.
