25 YEARS. WE REMEMBER.
September 11, 2001, changed the world, and it changed the fire service forever.
Twenty-five years later, we remember the 343 firefighters and paramedics of the New York City Fire Department who made the ultimate sacrifice while running toward danger to save others. We also remember the police officers, emergency responders, military personnel, civilians, and countless others whose lives were forever changed that day.
For those of us in the fire service, 9/11 is more than a date in history. Its lessons are carried with us every time we respond to an emergency. Our understanding of high-rise firefighting, incident command, communications, firefighter accountability, building intelligence, emergency preparedness, and the importance of operating as one unified team has evolved profoundly since that day.
But perhaps one of the most important lessons has been understanding that the sacrifice did not end when the towers fell. Thousands of first responders and survivors have since suffered serious illnesses linked to their exposure at Ground Zero. Many have lost their lives in the years that followed. Their names belong alongside those who died on September 11th.
We remember them, too.
Our relationship with the FDNY has given us the privilege of standing alongside members of the New York fire service and attending services in New York City. To be present in those places—to stand among firefighters who continue to carry the memories of their brothers and sisters—is an experience that leaves a lasting impression.
From North Vancouver to New York, the bond between firefighters transcends borders.
We train together.
We learn from one another.
We stand together.
And when one of our own falls, we remember.
On this 25th anniversary, the North Vancouver City Fire Department honours the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of all those affected by September 11, 2001.
Never forgotten.
Always remembered.
