“I just want to have a picture I like of myself.”

That is what Gordena said to me the day she came in to book her photo shoot for our 40 Women Over 40.

And I admired her honesty so much.

She talked about struggling with low self-esteem throughout her life, and now, before her 80th birthday, she decided it was time.

And today is that birthday.

80 years young.

I’ve known this precious soul for a good number of years through her daughter Denise, and her granddaughters Autumn and Miranda, who have been here many times.

Look at her smile in these first few photos.

Can’t you see the kindness in this beautiful woman’s face?

With Johnny Reid playing in the background, and her daughter and granddaughter watching on, we captured what I truly feel is the essence of this elegant lady.

A woman who simply wanted to like her photos.

There was a magical moment during this portion of the shoot where her granddaughter looked over at me with her jaw dropped!

It was during that first outfit, her smile, so enchanting and comforting.

She also loved the throne, and her everyday look is wonderful too!

And about that ladder…

That's her keeping her steps up!

Gordena wanted to stand on it because, as she said:

“I want to keep going for my grandkids and great-grandkids. I never want to slow down.”

80 is only a number.

“I am so blessed to have them in my life,” she told me.

Gordena, anyone who knows you is blessed to have you in theirs.

Let's affirm this gorgeous lady on her 80th birthday and feel free to share this around, I promise it will make you smile!

So let me ask you…

What would be your why?

What has been holding you back from doing our 40 Women Over 40?

Come in for a consultation. It doesn’t cost anything to chat and see if this is for you.

Kids don’t usually become what we tell them to become.

They become what they live beside.

What they watch.
What gets modeled for them in the quiet moments nobody applauds.

That truth was sitting right in front of me during Leah’s session.

Yes, she has a striking look about her. I teased her that she had a bit of a Scarlett Johansson look and she laughed, saying she’s heard that before. Not surprising.

But what stood out most had nothing to do with appearance.

While her mom was getting her hair done, I asked Leah what she admired most about her mother.

“She’s outspoken.”

Then quickly added, “Not in a bad way.”

What she meant was courage.

Watching her mother confidently be herself helped Leah come out of her own shell and stop being afraid to use her voice too.

Then I asked about her dad.

“Empathy.”

He’s a funeral director, and honestly, that answer said everything. You don’t do that kind of work without carrying deep compassion for people. Apparently that same kindness follows him home too.

The beautiful part?

When I later asked her parents what they admired most about Leah… their answers mirrored the exact qualities she admired in them.

Confidence.
Empathy.
Heart.

A beautiful little circle.

Not perfect people.
Just a family loving each other well enough that pieces of themselves quietly live on in the next generation. 🤍

And this isn’t the last you’ll see of Miss Leah… she’ll soon be back for our Ultimate Prom Experience at the beautifully decorated Arm of Gold Campground. Can’t wait for that one.

There are moments in life that don’t ask for much…

Just a little time.
A little intention.
And someone who understands how important it all really is.

This is one of those moments.

Callie and Elenie came in not once… but twice last year.

First for graduation.
And then again… for something a little more magical.

Our Ultimate Prom Experience.

And I’ll tell you where this all really began…

Back during COVID… when everything felt uncertain, heavy… and honestly, a little unfair for young people who were supposed to be celebrating one of the biggest milestones of their lives.

No prom.
No dance.
No moment.

But then a client reached out to me.

She had an idea…

She wanted to decorate the barn at the Arm of Gold Campground for her daughter and her daughter’s friend.

Just something simple… just something special for them.

And I remember thinking…

That’s it right there.

So we took that idea… and we built on it.

The campground was kind enough to say yes.
We transformed the space… lights glowing like fireflies in a summer sky, vintage pieces telling stories in every corner, a setting that felt like stepping into something timeless.

And then something unexpected happened…

Parents got their first dance.

Right there.
In the middle of all that uncertainty.

And I’ll never forget it.

Because it wasn’t just photos anymore.

It was a moment that mattered.

And that’s why we still do it today.

Now fast forward to Callie and Elenie.

Cousins… but if you spent five minutes with them, you’d swear they were sisters.

The kind of bond that doesn’t need explaining.

You can see it in the way they walk together down that grassy path…
Laughing like time isn’t chasing them.

You can see it sitting on that swing… dresses flowing, like something out of a dream you don’t want to wake up from.

And inside… under those warm lights…

That quiet confidence.

That “this is our moment” feeling.

And here’s the truth…

This season of life?

It goes by in a blink.

One minute you’re planning dresses…
The next, you’re looking back at photos wondering how it all moved so fast.

That’s why we do what we do.

Not just to take pictures…

But to give you something to hold onto when the moment has passed.

And yes… after all this…

We went for ice cream. 🍦

Because around here, that’s just how it’s done.

Moments like this deserve a sweet ending.

We’re booking now for this year’s Ultimate Prom Experience.

Limited dates.
One-of-a-kind setting.
And a memory your family will talk about for years.

There are a lot of ways to measure a young man.

Grades. Goals. Plans.

But if you really want the truth… you watch how he treats people when there’s nothing in it for him.

When I asked his mom, Roseanne, what she loved most about her boy… she didn’t hesitate. Through tears, she said, “the way he treats Darby.”

Darby… the surprise little sister who arrived a few years back and changed the whole rhythm of the house.

And Jake?

He didn’t just accept her.

Sounds like he adored her.

Right from the start.

You can picture it, can’t you… a little girl realizing pretty quickly that having a big brother like that is better than any stuffed toy she could ever own. And from the sounds of it, she’s made good use of that discovery. 😊

But that’s the thing…

Kids don’t fake who they feel safe with.

And Darby chose Jake.

In the studio, he was exactly what you’d expect.

Easygoing. Kind. The kind of young fella who doesn’t need to take up all the space in the room to be noticed.

He’s heading into electrical next year. Wants a trade. Likes working with his hands.

Feels like a natural fit.

Steady.

Grounded.

The kind of path that builds a life.

But the moment that stuck with me didn’t come during the photos.

It came after.

They were choosing their images… and like most grads, you’d expect him to lean toward the ones he liked best.

But not Jake.

His focus wasn’t on himself.

It was on his mom.

He wanted to make sure she chose the ones that meant the most to her.

That’s a small moment on the surface.

But underneath?

That’s everything.

That’s respect.

That’s gratitude.

That’s love, showing up without needing to say a word.

And I’ll tell you…

There’s something powerful that happens in that room when a mom looks at her “little boy” standing there in a grad gown.

Time doesn’t move in a straight line anymore.

It folds.

All the years… all the moments… all the effort… come rushing back at once.

And in that moment, you don’t just see who he is…

You see everything it took to get him there.

That’s what we care about here.

Not just the photo.

But the feeling behind it.

Creating a space where those moments can happen… and be held onto long after the cap and gown are put away.

If you’ve been thinking about grad portraits… or you want something that means a little more than just “getting it done”…

Some families don’t need to say much.

You feel it anyway.

Been coming for a quarter century now.

Nadine was back in the studio recently… this time with her boy, Josh. Quiet, easygoing… the kind of family that doesn’t try to impress you, but somehow does without even trying.

And standing there with them, I had one of those full-circle moments.

I photographed Nadine and her husband’s engagement… 25 years ago.

Now here we are… her boys are grown, heading into their next chapter at Cape Breton University… both earning scholarships. Smart kids. Grounded. The kind you know are going to be just fine in life.

Josh will be heading into Arts… and like a lot of young people, he’s still figuring it out.

And honestly?

That’s exactly where he’s supposed to be.

I'm also going to dig through the archives to find their engagement photos from all those years ago.

Because there’s something powerful about that…

A beginning… and everything that came after.

If you’ve been thinking about getting a portrait of your kids before they head off… before life pulls them in different directions…

This is your nudge.

Don’t wait for the “perfect time.”

It’s already here.

You notice it right away.

Hayley’s smile.

Not just because it’s pretty… though it absolutely is…

but because it’s real.

When she smiles, the whole room softens. There’s a sparkle in her eyes that you can’t fake… the kind that comes from someone who feels good in who they are.

And that’s exactly how she was that day.

Light.
Present.
Happy to be there.

I had stepped out to the gym while she was getting ready…

and by the time I got back, Wren Fraser had already done her thing.

And Hayley?

She was glowing.

Not in a “look at me” kind of way…

just in a quiet, steady confidence.

She told me about her dress… the first one she tried on at Memorial… the only one.

And it made sense.

Because it looked like it had chosen her just as much as she chose it.

That soft blue… the lace… the way it fit her perfectly…

it didn’t change her.

It just reflected her.

And that’s what stayed with me.

You don’t always see someone so at ease in their own skin at that age.

No overthinking.
No holding back.

Just a young woman standing there, comfortable in who she is…

and letting that be enough.

Her mom…

you could feel the pride.

Not loud.

Not showy.

Just deep.

The kind that comes from walking through things together… like so many families do… and coming out the other side stronger.

Closer.

She told me Hayley had always been a great daughter.

Never gave her any trouble.

And the way they were together…

you believed every word of it.

She’s heading to Alberta for a year with her family…

then coming back to take early childhood education.

She said she loves kids.

And honestly… that feels like the perfect fit.

There’s a kindness in her… a gentleness… the kind of presence that people are drawn to without even knowing why.

If you’ve been thinking about doing photos…

don’t wait for the perfect time.

It doesn’t show up the way you think it will.

These moments… this age… this version of your family…

this is the perfect time.

Good luck with everything, Hayley.

That light in you?

It’s going to take you a long way. ✨

There’s a quiet about Noah.

Not the kind that fades into the background…
the kind that settles a room.

Calm. Gentle. Kind.

The kind of young man people trust without even knowing why.

His mother told me, more than once, that her goal was to raise a gentleman.

And when you stand in front of Noah now…
you realize that wasn’t just a hope.

That was a promise she kept.

I’ve known Noah longer than he’s known himself.

The very first photograph I ever did of him…
he hadn’t even taken his first breath yet.

Still safe, still waiting…
held close by his mom.

Years later, I saw him again out in Fort McMurray.

A little guy then.

Full of life. Full of energy.
The kind of energy that keeps a mother on her toes and a smile on her face at the same time!!!

And now…

Here he is.

A young man.

Steady. Grounded.
Choosing a path in heavy-duty mechanics at Memorial… working with his hands, building something real.

There’s something honest about that.

Something solid.

And I have a feeling his dad sees a lot of himself in him.

His mom… I’ve known her since 1989.

I can still picture her on that stage at the Winter Carnival concert…
clear as day.

Back then, she was just beginning her story.

And now here she is…

Looking at her boy.

Her baby.

Because no matter how tall he gets…
that part never changes.

You can see it in the photos we created.

That look in her eyes.

It’s not just pride.

It’s every sleepless night…
every worry…
every prayer…
every moment she wondered if she was getting it right.

All of it… sitting there quietly in her eyes…
looking back at him.

And maybe, just for a second…

She sees the little boy again.

Noah is loved.

Deeply.

By his sisters too… Emma Rain being there at the reveal, watching it all unfold.

You can feel it in that family.

That closeness.

That bond.

The kind that doesn’t need to be explained…
just felt.

Time has a way of moving faster than we’re ready for.

One minute you’re holding them…

The next…

you’re standing beside them, hoping the world is kind.

But if kindness counts for anything in this life…

Noah’s going to be just fine.

Let’s give him a big hand… and wish him a future that’s as steady and good as the young man he’s become.
