"Cory - the Heart of Norman Ave and Connaught Ave"

Who is the best Crossing Guard in North Bay and Area? This was the question by FM Kiss 100.5 North Bay.

There was some fierce competition throughout the city, and even within the Employment First program, as we support four individuals whom are employed by the City of North Bay, with all four receiving nominations.

When voting wrapped up, the city spoke, with Employment First’s, Cory Potter standing out from the rest, winning by a large margin. The community feedback described Cory as the happiest, funniest, and friendliest crossing guard around. Many shared how he shows up with a great attitude even on the worst weather days, proving just how much the community appreciates and embraces him.

The role of a crossing guard demands patience, awareness, and a calm presence, even in stressful situations. The job doesn’t stop for the weather; rain, snow, heat, and cold are all part of the routine. Cory takes pride in showing up every day, knowing that his reliability truly makes a difference.

Crossing guards are the heart of the school crossings, and as many residents put it, "Cory is the Heart of Norman Ave and Connaught Ave".

Community Living North Bay’s Employment First program had the privilege of attending “Workforce Week 2026” at the Grande Event Centre in North Bay last week, hosted by The Labour Market Group.
The three day event opened with “Get Job Ready,” where Employment First staff and our job seekers participated in a series of supports designed to help individuals prepare for meaningful employment. Attendees had access to guidance, resources, and professional assistance as they took the next step toward achieving their employment goals.
Day Two featured the “Connect” event, bringing together Employment First and other employment focused agencies to collaborate on planning and coordinating activities that highlight job seekers, employers, and community partners. Keynote speaker Shelley Lamothe delivered an insightful and engaging presentation that resonated with everyone in attendance, offering a deeper understanding of the evolving workforce landscape.
Day Three wrapped up Workforce Week with a public job fair. Employment First and the individuals we support connected directly with employers, building valuable relationships and exploring new opportunities.
Overall, Workforce Week 2026 was a tremendous success. The event plays a vital role in strengthening our community by bringing job seekers, employers, service providers, and local partners together in one collaborative space. Fostering connection, inclusion, and shared progress.
