What began as a scheduled public demonstration and training exercise became a real-life emergency response in a remote area of Algonquin Park, where preparation and coordination played a critical role.

Earlier in the day, District of Nipissing Paramedic Services staff had been participating in the demonstration and were preparing for an off-road response exercise with partnering emergency services when the team was redirected to an active call for service.

At the same time, a family travelling through Algonquin Park was managing a serious allergic reaction while camping near Mouse Lake. Initial treatment was attempted, but symptoms progressed.

Recognizing the severity of the situation and their distance from help, the family activated an emergency beacon, still hours away from any traditional access point.

DNSSAB’s Off-Road Response Team travelled approximately 13 kilometres into the park to reach the patient and provide advanced care on site, helping prevent the situation from worsening and safely transporting the patient out of the park.

This incident underscores the unpredictability of medical emergencies in remote settings and the importance of having the right resources, partnerships, and readiness in place to support a positive outcome.
