Community Notice: Giant Hogweed Awareness

Good Day Community Members,

We would like to make everyone aware that Giant Hogweed has recently been spotted in the Naiscootang area. Giant Hogweed is an invasive plant that can pose serious health risks if touched.

The sap from Giant Hogweed can cause severe skin irritation, burns, blistering, and long-lasting sensitivity to sunlight. Contact with the eyes may also cause serious injury.

How to Identify Giant Hogweed:

Very large plant that can grow up to 14 feet tall
Thick green stems with purple blotches and coarse white hairs
Large jagged leaves
White umbrella-shaped flower clusters

We ask all community members to:

Avoid touching the plant
Keep children and pets away from the area
Do not attempt to cut or remove the plant without proper protection
Report any sightings to the Band Office or appropriate community staff

If you believe you have come into contact with Giant Hogweed:

Wash the affected area immediately with soap and cold water
Keep the area out of sunlight
Seek medical attention if irritation or burns occur

Please help us keep our community safe by staying aware and sharing this information with family and friends.

๐ŸŒŠ Water Update ๐ŸŒŠ

The latest environmental testing from the Shawanaga First Nation Water Department has confirmed that the Landing is safe for recreational use! (It may be a little chilly still) โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ง

While the water currently meets safety standards, conditions can change quickly due to weather, wildlife, and water activity. Please continue to use caution while swimming and remind children to avoid swallowing the water.

๐Ÿป BE BEAR AWARE ๐Ÿป

Help Keep Our Community Safe

Black bears are a natural part of our environment, but when bears begin visiting homes and roadsides looking for food, it can become dangerous for both people and wildlife. Together, we can help reduce unwanted bear activity in our community.

What You Can Do:

โ€ข Keep garbage secured and stored indoors until collection day
โ€ข Do not leave food, pet food, or bird seed outside overnight
โ€ข Clean BBQs and outdoor cooking areas regularly
โ€ข Pick up fallen fruit and food scraps from yards
โ€ข Keep dogs supervised and food dishes indoors when possible
โ€ข Never feed bears โ€” intentional or accidental feeding teaches bears to return

Why It Matters:

Once bears begin relying on human food sources, they can lose their fear of people and continue returning to homes and public spaces. Preventing access to food is the best and safest way to reduce bear activity.

If You See a Bear:

โ€ข Stay calm and keep your distance
โ€ข Do not approach or attempt to feed the bear
โ€ข Bring children and pets indoors
โ€ข Report frequent bear activity to the Administration Office so we can contact Wildlife Services.

By working together, we can help protect our families, pets, and the bears themselves.

Miigwech for doing your part to keep our community safe. ๐Ÿพ
