For generations, the Budweiser Clydesdales have been instantly recognisable — towering horses, white feathered legs, gleaming harnesses and the famous red wagon.

But one part of that traditional appearance has now changed for good.

Anheuser-Busch announced in 2023 that it had **ended the practice of tail docking for its Clydesdales**, meaning the horses would be allowed to keep their tails naturally.

Tail docking involves removing part of a horse’s tailbone rather than simply trimming the hair. Historically, it was associated with working draft horses, with supporters arguing that shorter tails were less likely to become caught in harnesses or machinery.

As working practices changed, however, the welfare justification for docking became increasingly controversial.

Animal-welfare organisations campaigned against the practice, arguing that a horse’s tail serves important functions. Horses use their tails to swat flies and other insects, communicate through body language and protect sensitive areas of their bodies.

The decision followed growing public pressure over why horses used primarily for promotional appearances were still undergoing a procedure rooted in an earlier era of heavy agricultural work.

Anheuser-Busch confirmed that it had stopped tail docking and said the safety and wellbeing of its animals remained a priority.

It marked a significant change for one of the world’s most famous teams of horses.

The Budweiser Clydesdales have represented the brand since **1933**, becoming an American cultural icon through parades, public appearances and memorable television commercials.

Their spectacular appearance isn't disappearing. The powerful build, feathered legs, harnesses and red wagon remain.

But now there is another feature increasingly visible behind them — **their long, natural tails.**

Traditions can be treasured without remaining completely unchanged. And when a tradition can evolve in a way that improves the lives of the horses at its heart, that seems worth celebrating.
