🌟 Ambassador Spotlight: Bisi Olubiremi🌟

Meet Bisi, one of our dedicated Service Navigator Ambassadors!

“As a single mother who has faced divorce and the loss of our home, I know how overwhelming life can become. During those times, my community’s support and consistent check-ins helped my children and I stay strong. Today, I bring that lived experience into my outreach work. I meet people whose stories reflect my own, which reminds me why this work matters. I’m grateful for the opportunity to listen, support, and walk alongside others through their challenges.”

Bisi’s lived experiences help build trust, foster hope, and remind people that they are not alone.

Thank you Bisi for your dedication to making a positive impact in our community! 💙

🌟 Ambassador Spotlight: Olubiremi Demi 🌟

Demi is one of our dedicated Service Navigator Ambassadors!

"Becoming an ambassador for John Howard Society is something I’ve always wanted to do. Growing up as the child of a single mother, I saw firsthand how reaching out and connecting with our community helped us get to where we are today. That experience inspired me to help others connect with their communities during times of need. John Howard Society has given me the opportunity to connect with people and remind them that support is available and that they should never give up on themselves. It brings me joy to listen to people’s stories, empathize with their experiences, and know that through outreach, I am making a positive difference in their lives."

💙 Thank you, Demi, for your compassion and commitment to supporting our community.

"Environmental degradation doesn’t affect everyone equally – it disproportionately burdens communities that are already marginalized by race, class, or geography. This overlap between who suffers environmental harm and who lacks social power is exactly where environmental justice and social justice meet. Understanding this intersection is essential for anyone concerned with building a fairer, more sustainable world." Environmental Studies (EVS) Institute

Happy Pride Season! 🏳️‍🌈

Historically, Pride gatherings emerged from the first large-scale protests for 2SLGBTQI+ rights. In Canada, the first demonstrations took place in Ottawa and Vancouver in 1971. By 1973, Pride events were held in several Canadian cities, including Montreal, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Today, Pride events take place from June to September, when 2SLGBTQI+ people and their allies come together to highlight the resilience, celebrate the talent, and recognize their communities’ contributions.

National Indigenous History Month is recognized every June in Canada to honour the rich histories, diverse cultures, and lasting contributions of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples. It is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn, reflect, and deepen their understanding of Indigenous experiences - both the injustices of the past and the strength and resilience that continue today. This month calls us toward meaningful reconciliation and relationship building.

Today team came together for our 2nd Annual Mental Health Walk and it was an incredible day! 🪻

We walked 5km through beautiful Newmarket to raise awareness and support for mental health initiatives within our agency. Thanks to everyone who participated and donated! Funds raised will go directly back into mental health supports for those we serve.

After the walk, staff enjoyed a well-deserved BBQ together, the perfect way to connect, recharge, and celebrate the importance of mental wellness and community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success. We’re already looking forward to next year! 🚶‍♀️

🌟 AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT 🌟

Meet Carrie H — a dedicated Service Navigator Ambassador with John Howard Society of York Region.

“I chose to become an Ambassador of John Howard Society because I believe everyone deserves a second chance and the support to make it count. To me, this role is about replacing judgment with compassion and helping provide a proactive safety net through services like Housing Support, Employment Programs, and assistance accessing skills training or returning to school — ensuring people get help before challenges turn into legal ones. I’m proud to advocate for a justice system that focuses on healing and human potential.” 💙

Thank you, Carrie, for your passion, advocacy, and commitment to supporting the community every single day.

Many people face barriers in everyday life, such as buildings without ramps, lack of captions on videos, or attitudes that exclude or underestimate people with disabilities. May 25 to 31 is the National Accessibility Week which focuses on accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities. It highlights the importance of creating environments—physical, social, and digital—where everyone can fully participate. Accessibility benefits everyone. When spaces and systems are designed to include all people, communities become stronger, safer, and more equitable.
