Summer always seems to end a little too quickly. đź’›

On August 26, we gathered at Tipperary Park for one last big Family Place celebration: playing, eating, creating and spending time together before September arrived.

One of the most special parts of the day was celebrating our children heading off to Kindergarten. Starting school is a big milestone for children and their grown-ups, and we loved being able to mark it surrounded by the Family Place community that has watched them grow.

As school begins today, we’re wishing all of our families a wonderful start to the year. And remember: growing out of our early-years programs doesn’t mean growing out of Family Place. Parents and caregivers of children ages 6–12 are always welcome at our monthly Middle Matters meet-ups. We hope you all stay in touch!

Thank you to MP Jake Sawatsky, Hope from MLA Jennifer Whiteside’s office, the FIFA Fired Up for Football fund, Canada Summer Jobs, our volunteers, and especially our incredible summer students for helping make this summer, and this celebration, so special.💛

Getting around a new city can be surprisingly hard — and when you’re new to a whole country, even the little things can feel like a lot.

Which bus do I take? Is there a safer route? Can I bike there? What are my options if I don’t drive?

That’s exactly why we’re hosting a free Sustainable Transportation Workshop with BEST Mobility. Natalia and Rosemary share a little about why practical, local knowledge matters — and this workshop will offer tips for transit, walking, biking, rolling and shared transportation, plus promo codes for bike and car-share services.

Tuesday, September 15 | 1:00–2:00 PM
📍 New Westminster Family Place
Childminding + refreshments provided

Free to attend, but registration is required.

Curious about what free, open supports are out there for parents and caregivers of kids on the spectrum?

Thrive Parents is a relaxed, welcoming space to connect with other families, share resources and talk honestly about what’s helping, especially as we head back to school.

This month, we’re focusing on Back to School: routines, transitions, school communication, worries, wins and all the in-between.

Sometimes the sweetest reminders of what Family Place means happen in small, unexpected moments. đź’›

One of our little friends has been coming to Family Playtime with her nanny for the past eight months. As she gets ready to return home to Europe, she made a special trip in today with flowers and a card for our team to say thank you.

It meant so much to our whole team!

Our daily drop-ins may look like play, snacks, songs and conversation, but underneath all of that, relationships are growing. Families come back week after week, children become comfortable in the space, and trust builds between caregivers, children and our team.

We get to know people and over time, Family Place becomes a place where people feel welcomed, cared for and connected.

We’re so grateful for the families and caregivers who let us be part of their lives, and for the reminder that these relationships mean just as much to our team, too.

Next week is one of our favourite Family Place traditions: our Annual Summer Picnic!

On Wednesday, August 26, we’re taking Family Place to Tipperary Park for a big shared picnic lunch, outdoor drop-in fun, time to visit and play together, and a very special send-off for the children in our community who are heading to Kindergarten this fall. 💛

Note that this picnic is for ALL Family Place families! You don’t need to have a child starting Kindergarten to come. We’d love to fill the park with familiar faces: babies, toddlers, preschoolers, siblings, parents/caregivers and celebrate the end of summer together. For our Kindergarten families, we’ll also gather for a special little ceremony to cheer your children on as they take this very big next step. Having the wider Family Place community there to celebrate them makes it even more meaningful.

At New West Family Place, our monthly Eat, Play, Love lunch is about more than sharing a meal.

Once a month, families stay a little longer after drop-in to gather around the table, share food and spend time together.
For children, shared meals create space to watch, explore, choose and participate at their own pace. They see other people enjoying different foods, practise everyday social routines, and experience mealtimes as something connected to belonging and community. For caregivers, it’s a chance to slow down, connect and share space with other families without pressure or expectation.

And because everyone is invited to bring something to the table, our lunch often reflects the foods, cultures, traditions and favourites of the families who make Family Place what it is. Food brings us together and belonging keeps us connected.

That’s the ❤️ in Eat, Play, Love. Join us next month!

Our Transition to Kindergarten workshops are underway and it’s been wonderful to see families coming together to ask questions, share experiences and feel more prepared for the big transition ahead.

This series grew out of something we heard directly from families: you wanted more support in knowing what to expect when your child starts Kindergarten. And there’s still time to join us! 🙌

Wednesday, August 19 | 7:00–9:00 p.m. "Parent Rights, Responsibilities & School Routines"

We’ll be joined by DPAC representative Laura for a practical conversation about navigating the school system, understanding your role as a parent or caregiver, and getting familiar with some of the routines and expectations that come with starting school.

Thursday, August 20 | 7:00-9:00 "Building Your Village"

Missed the first two workshops? That’s okay! Each session stands on its own, and new families are very welcome.
